East Coast family road trip suggestions

end of May we are traveling to visit family in DC and on the way back we want to explore and stay 2 nights somewhere on the way back to Mandeville.
Ideally somewhere that is a significant part of the driving done or around half, we are thinking maybe Savannah would be a good place, we have done Atlanta recently with the kids 1,5 and 7, so no need to go there again.
Any place you have been that was cool to recommend?

Charleston.
I like Savannah but I consider it a scaled down version of Charleston.

Why are you looking to spend two days in a place like SC or Savannah? IMO, they're very similar to the gulf coast as it is. I know you have a soft constraint on wanting it to be more than halfway, but then you're back in the same culture and food you get in most of the rest of the south anyway.
Have you thought about going down I-81 instead of I-95? At least the scenery will be more interesting, and you can find caves and stuff on the way. I have I-95 trauma from living in the mid Atlantic or New England as a kid for years.

I’m with LemmyLives here. I live in the DC area, and the drive down 95 is the worst.
If you wanted to opt more for mountains than coast, taking I-81 and checking out Skyline drive, Blue Ridge Pkwy, Smoky Mountain National Park, etc., would be a nice drive.
Chattanooga is basically halfway to Mandeville from here and there are quite a few fun things to do for a family there - Lookout Mountain and the incline railway, Ruby Falls, Rock City Gardens, etc.
We typically drive back to Louisiana to visit family (we bring our dog) and Chattanooga has become our traditional stop on the way back

I’d hit Charleston for a couple of nights. If you have extra time, a day in Savannah or St. Augustine.

Well we are just looking to do something else on the way back, that doesn't add like 8 hours of driving to our trip is all. we have never been to Savannah, heard it was nice, that's all.
You are right, we went to Gatlinburg last year, drive is much prettier, we went to the underground cave with the lake it was pretty cool.

Savannah is nice, but I'm not sure there's as much to do there with young kids as there is in Charleston. Charleston has more beaches (4 islands within a short drive), boat rides/tours, children's museum, aquarium, etc.
