Ever going to be a re-surge of classic motels?

Sitting here watching “Rain Man”, and when they stay at the old motel with the neon, it brought back memories of staying in motels like that as a kid on vacation.
A couple summers ago, I stayed at the Blue Swallow Motel on Route 66, in Tucumcari, NM. It was like stepping back into the 70’s (or even earlier).
Is there some website or list of re-vamped motels across the US?

The business model has just changed. Folks are either tribal (Marriott, Starwood, Hilton, etc.) or shop solely on price (Hotels.com, Travelocity, etc.).
So, the brand normalization and pricing for the segment are all that matters to the corporate giants, not a fancy sign to pull people off the road with their flashing "VACANCY" sign.

Love those places, mainly for the nostalgia. Always stopped in places like that when I was a kid.

Check out The Drifter on Tulane Avenue in NOLA. There is definitely a resurgence in motels. Palm Springs comes to mind.

Well, according to people of Tucumcari, Radiator Springs is based off of Tucumcari, so I’ve been there

Refurbing these hotels is definitely a trend. Funnily enough, I went to the El Rey in Santa Fe yesterday afternoon for happy hour. It’s an example of this and gets a lot of buzz from the LA hipster crowd.
There’s one in Eureka Springs, Arkansas called the Wanderoo Lodgd.

I could see running something like this as somewhat of a B&B. Hotels have a lot of overhead though so the problem as has been pointed out is the location and price point. You’d have to find somewhere that would attract people naturally but that a big hotel is not already nearby.
It’s also extremely expensive to update them so the interior is anything reasonably decent to modern standards.
I’ve stayed in plenty of 60s and 70s era fish camps and old homes. I don’t have an issue with it, but your average woman wants better.

there are plenty of older drive up motels in m\id-sized cities that are getting extensively renovated...the "retro" theme but with stuff like lounges, brewpubs, yard games, etc.
i like the trend
most of the refurbished places i've stayed are not cheap, at all. the place we like in boulder ( BASECAMP) is like 250/nite and they also offer outfitting services, etc
if in an area of lots of young people, its a great idea

We just has this thread a few weeks ago. Not sure if here or on OT.
Check out Valley Ho if you are ever in Scottsdale.
Awesome place to spend July 4th. Hot as balls but they have a big pool party, nice cabana suites, a rooftop bar with 360° views of the valley for fireworks, and heavy discounts.
