Everyone's Favorite Airport, Newark, and the Upcoming Runway Construction

Hope everyone had a great thanksgiving. Had the luxury to fly in and out of Newark where inbound flights averaged 95 minute delays due to air traffic control staffing.I've been watching these air traffic control delays and they seem to be happening daily starting around 10/11am and lasting until midnight. An average of 95 minutes means your flight could be on time or delayed 4 hours, you just never know what specific flights each airline will delay.
I also was just made aware of upcoming runway construction in 2025 that's going to begin... LINK
So throw in ATC delays along with runway construction delays and you have a mess that's about to become an even bigger mess at EWR. If you're going to NYC, would recommend LGA or JFK. If you have to take united to Newark, try and catch the first flight of the day.
If you are connecting to Europe or somewhere else in the northeast, avoid EWR.

Runway closures at EWR warrant “limited, conditional schedule relief” because the impacts to operations are beyond the carriers’ control and extend throughout 2025, the FAA said. Weekend closures will occur from March 1 to April 14, 2025, and Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, 2025, with daily closures from April 15 to June 15, 2025.

That scheduling boggles the mind. Daily closures during the summer?

I typically don't like when people say "I hate XXX airport" because its the sign of someone who doesn't travel often. Little airports are very easy to navigate, park at, and get a rental but often have few flight options which is frustrating and downright bad in case of delays and cancelations. Big airports are the reverse, plus usually have good food.
That said I dislike Newark as it is big and very hard to navigate, the monorail sucks arse, the pods system means you can't get a drinnk at the next terminal over (if the bars are crowded), local traffic is awful, and the subway to downtown Manhattan stops at downtown Newark, leaving a five mile gap.
EWR blows. There is little redeeming value.

Don’t forget it’s like a 2 mile walk to get to the rental car counter.

We flew into Newark Tuesday at 330pm and out of there 1200pm Saturday and had zero issues with times. Now, it’s inefficient as hell with shitty NJ dickhead workers but we weren’t delayed.

EWR has exactly one redeeming quality, and that's the NJ Transit train. You take the (admittedly) shitty AirTrain system to the train station, get out, walk to the other side of the station, then get on a commuter train that will take you all the way to New York Penn Station. If EWR wasn't such an abject fricking train wreck, it would easily be the easiest way into Manhattan if you're balancing both speed and cost.
Unfortunately, it's an abject fricking train wreck

ETA: Newark is terrible and new job will have me flying into there once a month or so

I fly in and out of Newark very often. Flying from out west to the East Coast I fly into Newark and spend a night or more depending on my schedule. I like Newark much more than ATL or Miami. I have some issues with United, but not Newark. I’m flying there tomorrow.

Do you think your experience is related to Thanksgiving traffic?
I know you are our resident expert for all things air travel, do you work at a particular airport?

Got very lucky. Last week was particularly bad, not sure if it was due to extra flights for thanksgiving but every day averaged 90 minute delays. I also came to find out that TSA precheck in terminal A closes at 8pm thus the line closes at 7:45pm. When that happens, they go down to a single security checkpoint... Took about 25 minutes and the line doubled after I got through it

To each their own

Could have been one of the many reasons for delays, but its Newark so a cloud could be overhead and they'd delay everything. Vacation time for the few remaining air traffic controllers also popped up in my mind

No. Thought crossed my mind if I got laid off to find a temporary gig at one of the airports. I'm basically a travel agent in my spare time

I flew in and out of Newark again this week. We still think it’s one of our favorite “large” airports. I do agree the walk to the rental car is way too long. Still in find the TSA, staff, and crowds much friendlier than other places.
