We just got back from a 4-night trip to this all-inclusive near Cancun. Thought I'd give a review.

First of all, I'd like to thank this board, as we were steered there by reviews from this site.

It was very nice. We stayed in a pool-side room for $600+ per nite. Food and drink were good and service was even better. Not too crowded, although if you want umbrella chairs on the beach, you should claim them by 10 am. Chairs around the many pools were plentiful. You need slacks or khakis for most of the restaurants. For lunch, you need shorts (no swim suit) unless you eat at the beach hut (Las Olas?), which we did every day. Plenty of activities, or you can just relax. Didn't play the Greg Norman course, but looked to be in good shape. I would definitely go back. Would be ideal for a group of couples. If you have any questions, I'll answer best that I can.

My wife and I are going with 2 other couples in July. What was your favorite restaurant/meal and drink? Did y'all do the spa?

i went a couple of weeks ago. My favorite restaurant was the nice french one. We also enjoyed the asian one as well. Hell, they were all good actually.

Drinks kind of depend on preference. They can pretty much make what you want

We did the spa. It was very, very nice. I thought it was pretty expensive, however it was my first massage and we were on vacation so i thought why the hell not

I went to El Dorado Royale in October for 2nd time and had a great time. Am looking at a 4 night trip for April and was considering EDR again, or EPM.

I was literally about to pull the trigger, and I read about the cartel violence that is happening in the hotel zone. Any insight? May punt and look at Dominican Republic.

We're going to Punta Cana in October and found out a couple of days ago the Punta Cana location will be closed at that time but El Carmen will be open. El Carmen doesnt quite get the reviews as the other resorts and I've heard less then exciting things about the food but my hopes are that since it is "newer" these are just some kinks they need to work out.

At $312/night for a swim up, the price seems right and I'm sure either way we're going to have fun.

Looks great, where did you find it that cheap? Looks like they are around $500 for April

I have stayed at an Excellence before and it was fine, but we opted for the excellence club room. I don't need the nicest room, but dont you have to be Excellence Club to access certain parts? I don't like to be cut off

We are going to EEC in October as well. I wouldn't worry about the reviews. They are constantly getting better, and new resorts are notorious for having bad reviews in the first 6 months. That's why we picked Oct, as it will have a full year of operations, and should have all the kinks worked out.

We paid $304/Night for the ocean view rooms. Love going in October as the rates are some of the best, and the resorts are not very crowded.

There is a small part of the beach that is for EC only. There is typically one restaurant that is EC, and one bar. I don't find upgrading to EC worth it, but it's obviously a personal preference. It would have been like $600 more for the same room category in EC, and I think it offers very few benefits.

Stayed at the Excellence in Punta Cana about 4 years ago. It was great. We had a swim out room and loved having the access. Very nice resort with good food, decent alcohol and very good staff. They typically have a BBQ out by the pool at least one night a week and I highly recommend it. Lots of different foods there which gives you a good variety

If I had one complaint about the Excellence in Punta Cana is that it is on the north west end of Punta Cana. On that end the surf is a little stronger. If you like just chilling in the calm ocean, you wont get a lot of opportunities to do so. Waves are pretty high. We were there in August

They had one of the best Gyms and outdoor activity areas of any all inclusive resorts. Clay tennis courts, a huge work out gym with great equipment and a outdoor area with TV's, pool tables and such. Plus they have a night club with dancing late into the night

Favorite restaurant: Wife liked Spice (Asian, had sushi, which she likes), I liked Lobsterhouse (outdoors, on the beach).
They were all good, and easy to get a table any time other than 7:30-8:30, when you may have to wait about ten minutes at some of them. You need to dress in something nicer than jeans. I did see them tactfully ask someone to go change clothes. He was wearing basketball shorts and cap turned backwards.
Favorite drink: wife liked "the Excellent ". Vodka and several kinds of fruit juices. I stuck with tequila and beer. Had them make me an Old-fashioned once. Lots of options!
Crime: Its within a very protected, gated community (actually go thru 2 separate gates) with private beach. 30 minutes from Cancun. Our van driver said the recent violence was from local drug dealers, not the cartel, although I read somewhat differently in latest news. Not sure what to believe. If violence spreads or continues, they're screwed, since tourism is really all they have there. The only time I felt we were anywhere near an area that could have some crime was on the van ride to and from airport, and it really didn't look that grungy.

Wife did the spa; loved it. She said to do the "hydrotherapy ". Sorry, didn't really take any pictures; was too busy drinking and relaxing.

I'm really thinking of booking this resort for our honeymoon in mid Sept. We are only going for 5 nights so the ease of travel is hard to pass up for the price/value based on reviews. The two story terraces look amazing as well.

In addition I really like the proximity of fly fishing at Isla Blanca. I have permission to book a guide for a day if she can get a spa day.

Is there a benefit of going through an agent or any tricks to get a discount vs booking through the resort?

My wife and I went 3-4years ago....we had a blast, we did the excellence club( I didn't think it was worth it in hindsight). The two story terrace was pretty amazing, great room / view. She's been wanting to go back since we left I think.
