If the weather is nice you can go to Paul B. Johnson State Park and hang out a while. Maybe bring some food and picnic. Not in Hattiesburg but 20-25 minutes away.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I’ve been added some territory at work - basically Meridian to West Point in MS.
Any good restaurants just North of Meridian and just South of Starkvegas?

It’s been over 20 years, but we used to enjoy canoeing and kayaking at the Okatoma Outdoor Post. No clue if it’s still around.

OH! There's the site of the only nuclear tests to take place East of the Mississippi River about 30 miles outside Hattiesburg. If you don't mind teaching the kids about some light trespassing, there's that.

ETA: East of the Rockies, apparently. Anyway, it's in the middle of godforsaken pine trees, like everything in that part of Mississippi and there's a granite marker with a plaque.

For kids, the Pocket Museum and the Lucky Rabbit. Keg & Barrell or Glory Bound are good options for lunch.

Go visit Southern Miss. It’s like a smaller version of LSU. They have a big golden eagle sanctuary on campus near fraternity row.

Alley Cats axe throwing is pretty fun. They have a couple of the velcro targets for the kids too. My 6 year old enjoys it when we take her

There simply is not much of anything of note on US Hwy. 45 between Meridian & the Starkvegas/Columbus/West Point Metro area.

So no.

Carry water and MREs.

Find the midget house. Maybe the old insane asylum. Ask around about the cat lady if she’s still alive.

Ps Ribs and More. Check him out on FB. If he's close by, go get the ribs. You won't regret it! His name is Dwight!

You are most welcome!

Harvey's in Starkville or Columbus (or Tupelo) always has great food as well - no matter what you order.

I’ve always been surprised as to why Hattiesburg doesn’t market themselves as a desirable place to live, especially for retirees.

Small town feel with all of the amenities you would need. Not too far from NW Florida beaches. Great local restaurants and plenty of nice golf courses. Affordable housing and a decent sized university too.

It especially including unincorporated west Hattiesburg/oak grove really is a nice place. It’s been a while since i have been there, but it was great and has grown a lot with restaurants and retail since then. I have some friends that live there.

If you can bring bikes, I was impressed with the Longleaf Trace bike trail. Goes from Hattiesburg through some small towns to the NW. I thought it was surprisingly scenic outside the city. Multiple options for parking along the trail.

Laurel was the location of Belle Reve (French for "beautiful dream"), Blanche Dubois' lost family plantation in A Streetcar Named Desire. (For legal reasons it was changed to "Oriole" in the movie)

Always found it odd Williams would place it there rather than the Delta where he spent his childhood.
Agreed. I think the Delta might fit my description of an "escape hatch" more formulaically than Laurel. I've been to Centerville, Ms a time or two also. That's another one of those places that I could see Williams using to inspire his creativity. Speaking of whom, I rented "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" on Prime last night and enjoyed so much. I've seen it about 20 times I think. You just reminded me how much I like Streetcar too, so I'll get it tonight. Williams is the only modern rival to Shakespeare in the English language; that I am firm about.
