Going to Highlands mid October. Looking for any info on places to stay, in town or cabins. Any other recs for things to do appreciated. TIA

It's been over 15 years since our last trip, but we would always stay in Sapphire Valley. May be a little far depending on what you're looking for.

Old Edwards Inn
This is the only real answer if you want to stay right smack downtown. However, the surrounding area is full of really nice AirBnB's that we've stayed at several times.
Next to Old Edwards is my favorite dining spot in town: Four65 Woodfire Bistro

Haven't spent a ton of time in Highlands outside of walking the main strip. I'd recommend doing breakfast at Dillard House in Dillard, GA and maybe Tallulah Falls while you're down that way.

We go to the area often, but actually stay in nearby Cashiers FWIW.
The iconic High Hampton Inn was refurbished and is on a stunning location.
There also a number of homes across the street in a quiet residential area, some along the golf course, we've stayed in.
Rental Examples.
You could do some VRBO searches.
Sapphire Valley is not much farther away. Large complex with lots of rental options.

VRBOs in the Highlands area can be very hit or miss. It's not my favorite area in that region, but I know a lot of people from NOLA seem to love it.

Went earlier this year and stayed at Highlander Mountain House. Smaller boutique hotel right on the end of the main drag so you can still walk to everything. Has its own restauraunt and bar and hangout areas. We enjoyed it.

For downtown Highlands proper both of the two best options have been mentioned - Old Edwards and Highlander Mountain House.
Just a way outside of town is the Skyline Lodge, an old retro motor hotel that was redone. It has easily the best steakhouse in the area.

If you go to Cashiers you can stay ultra high-end at High Hampton, or lower prices at The Wells Hotel or The Hotel Cashiers....or the iconic Hampton Inn in Sapphire.

It really is just a matter of how much you want to spend. There are plenty of nice places and its already a high priced area. Old Edwerds is the best all around high end place. Literally has everything and is perfect but you are going to pay up for it. We also brought our dog and HMH has dog friendly rooms which while they were small were still nice and cozy. I think my favorite part about HMH is its smaller so I could walk over to the main house and grab a drink at the little bar and sit on the couch in one of the rooms in front the fireplace and just do relax. Would definitely stay there again.
On another note, I think the owner of HMH had bought and was redoing another hotel right outside of town. Not sure what it was called or the progress on that but the owner knows what they are doing.
