We're going to be here for a couple nights during the first week of August. We'll be with our 3 kids (8, 6, and 4) who generally well behaved. Looking for suggestions on things to do and places to eat. We're staying at 200 Main. Our kids are pretty good for hikes but there needs to be a "prize" at the end (ie, waterfall, swimming hole). Also we're driving to Ashville after and will stopping along the way in Brevard to do Sliding Rock and maybe some hiking. Appreciate tips and advice.

Kid friendly hikes:
1. Whiteside Mountain - Get there early in the day as the parking lot is small and it's very popular. Go to the left at the trailhead(it's a loop) for the easier uphill hike. The "prize" is lots of amazing views.
2. Dry falls - It's not much of a hike as it's literally right off the road. It also gets VERY crowded so I haven't been in several years. You used to be able to walk back behind the waterfall, but they did some rail work there a few years ago and not sure if you still can.
Just down the road from Dry Falls is Bust Your Butt Falls. It's a little swimming hole with a rock slide, and a cliff to jump from.
3. Glen Falls - This hike can be a bit challenging. The trail goes along a creek/rive as it comes down a mountain and there are several waterfalls along it. The hike back up has a lot of switchbacks and is steep in a couple of places.
4. Sunset Rock - This really isn't a hiking trail, just a road you walk up. The end of the road is an area of exposed rock that looks westward, so it's popular to watch the sunset from. It also overlooks the town.

Forgot food recs..
Breakfast - The breakfast at Mountain Fresh Grocery is really good. I've also eaten at Blue Bike(I think that's the name of it) and it was good. I like Mountain Fresh better though. There was a newer place near where you're staying that had good reviews, but we never tried it. It's in the shopping center directly across from the hotel.
Lunch/Dinner - Not sure if you've been to Highlands before, but it's a bit of a pretentious town. There are no fast food(other than a Subway) or chain restaurants. Most of the restaurants are also nicer places. They are used to kids though, so none of them turn their nose up at kids, but just giving you a head's up. If your kids aren't real adventurous eaters, some places may not be for them.
That out of the way, I'll give another plug to Mountain Fresh. This is a little supermarket, so it's very casual. They have really good pizzas and burgers. Ugly Dog Pub is also casual and has bar food. Pescado Burritos is a good casual place for Mexican, though they have really weird hours. There's a place called Fresher's that has deli sandwiches. It's okay. I enjoy the little book store next to it. Sweet old lady runs it, probably just to kill time because it also has weird hours.
Nicer places for dinner - Lakeside is our favorite. Very small place and you'll need to make reservations soon. Not sure I've ever seen kids here before. Paoletti's is really good Italian. Wolfgang's is always good, and has a pretty large menu. On the Verandah is somewhat hit or miss. I've had some great meals there, but also a few duds. We do not like Wild Thyme. Bad service both times we went, and food was just okay.
We noticed a couple of new places when we were up there last summer, but didn't try them. Midpoint looked like a cool place, but no idea how it is. Bridge At Mill Creek is supposedly good as well, but we haven't been.
If you like craft beer, Satulah Mountain Brewing makes good beer.

You'll love it. We go to the area a few times/year.
Plenty of waterfalls to visit and check out. Some like Dry Falls, Bridal Veil Falls or Bridal Veil Falls are real near the road and don't require much hiking.
Things to do!
Some thoughts:
Go down to Lake Glenville and rent a pontoon boat! Great lake. Clean. Several waterfalls flow into it. Not that far from Highlands. They even have cruises if you don't want to go it alone.
Check out nearby Cashiers. Nice little village with a couple of nice restaurants. Stores. Go see the venerable old High Hampton Inn & Country Club. LINK
Or just download the All Trails App (if you don't have it) and find hikes that you want to do!
