In-Travel Thread: Italy, Germany, and Austria (Updated 8/2)

I’m going to do my best to update throughout the trip, I haven’t done one of these in a while.
Overview:
My wife and I are heading to Europe this evening for 10 days. We are going from Boston to JFK, then to Milan. We are spending one night outside Milan at Casa Maria Luigia, the hotel/restaurant of Massimo Bottura, the executive chef of Osteria Francescana. We are then flying from Bologna to Munich, driving from Munich to Austria with some stops along the way.
Boston to Milan:
Flew into JFK. Jesus Christ what a dump. Every time I fly through here, which is rare, I regret it. However, we had a long layover so we got a day pass at the TWA Hotel, which I highly recommend if you are in a similar position.
We are flying Emirates business class to Milan. Stopped at the lounge for some ok to decent food, the Veuve Cliquot and Seghesio Zinfandel was better. As far as Emirates, it’s the nicest business class I’ve been on, I can only imagine what their first class looks like.
I will say, the bar on the plane takes it over the top.
Looking forward to updating the thread and hope people enjoy it.

Day 1: Italy
We weren't intending to spend any time in Italy on this trip, but our initial flight had a lengthy layover in Milan anyway, so we decided to extend the trip one more day and spend one night in Italy so we could go to a place that has been on our list for a while.
We landed in Milan and drove straight from the airport to Modena, and arrived at Casa Maria Luigia in the afternoon. Casa Maria Luigia is a bed and breakfast that is owned and operated by Massimo Bottura, the executive chef of Osteria Francescana. The property is incredible, with a balsalmic vinegar production on site, grass tennis court, and even an area where he stores his private car collection that you are allowed to view.
We had the opportunity to eat at Osteria Francescana about six years ago and it was one of the more memorable meals of my life. They have a second Francescana location on the property that has a more casual vibe but with the same amazing food, and we had dinner there last night. Photos of the food are in order with the menu shown, for those interested.
We left this morning and made the drive from Modena to Munich, which was incredibly beautiful although longer than I would have liked. Just arrived in Munich and will update in a couple days on that.

Took that same flight earlier this summer. The onboard bar was stellar.

It was my first time on Emirates, and actually first time on a double decker plane. Very nice.
Arrived in Modena, IT a couple hours ago. Will update the thread when I have time.

How was the flight? The timing of it is kind of strange with the late departure and fairly quick flight
Good food and bev?

Only complaint about that flight is it is not long enough. Food, service, amenity kit, WiFi, bar, pajamas, FA who give a shite, it’s great. And a really good redemption of miles + cash (87,500 + $100 a person) to get to Italy, imho.

That can’t be right, can it?

100% correct. Flew 4 of us and spent $400 out of pocket. Cant even go to Canes for that amount anymore.

You have to get a little lucky with the Emirates Awards and find availability, but there are really good deals to be had.
We definitely did not pay out of pocket (sometimes I see those seats going for thousands of dollars) and got those seats for about 45k points. I give all the credit to my wife - she's great at finding things like that when we travel.

Fantastic flight and the drink options were great, both the cocktails and the wine list. I thought the food was good but I've had better, but to be fair due to the timing of our flight we didn't have a full dinner. They offered small bites including lamb as well as lobster ravioli.
I ate some lobster ravioli, had a few cocktails, and laid that bed all the way back and passed out until breakfast.

Sounds like a great trip.
Bologna is such a foodie gem, even among other regions/cities of Italy it stands out.
Nice I’m headed to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in a few weeks for their Partenkirchener Festwöche (basically the mini Oktoberfest for the Partenkirchen district), and some hiking and lake days at the Eibsee.
Bavaria and Tirol all full of gems for nature lovers any stops picked out yet?

I'll be honest with you, I don't know everywhere we're stopping. We just got to Munich and when we leave here will be driving to Vienna with a few stops in some small towns whose names I don't know along the way.
Sounds like you have an awesome trip planned.

That was a killer find!
Emirates can be a fantastic option. We flew to South Africa via Dubai Dec23. Was a better deal than anything around but not as good as what your wife found. Emirates' service, food, drinks are amazing. Flew Delta business on the way back from SA mostly for the lay flat seats (I'm 6'3"). Was an absolute shite show compared to Emirates. Waste of $$ although 17 hrs in a seat would have been torture. Delta didn't even clean up the business cabin before landing. Looked like a group of 13 yr old had a sleepover.
