Is the COVID19 “rectal swab” an urban legend?

I’ve seen some stuff online about some Japanese tourist having to have a “rectal swab” for COVID19 to get on a flight.
This seems ridiculous for a respiratory virus.
Is this one of those “fake news” stories?

I have a sibling who shared a screenshot of a recent COVID test. There was a section that said “Test Type” and the entry said “AN SWAB.” I didn’t ask for details.
ETA this was after traveling domestically upon returning to a northeastern state that rules their subjects through fear. I don’t know if it was for work or government policy.

There have been articles in everything from NYT to Washington Post about how China is using anal swabs on some folks. But it's not like they are doing it to the masses.
Some American diplomatic staff complained they were so swabbed, but China denied it.

Some experts in China say the anal swab method is a more accurate way of testing for COVID-19 because traces of the virus linger longer in the anus than in the respiratory tract. Li Tongzeng, a senior doctor from Beiking's Youan hospital, told CCTV that an anal swab "can increase the detection rate of infected people."
Anal swabs have actually been used in China to detect the coronavirus since last year, primarily in key groups at quarantine centers. However, CCTV said anal swabs wouldn't be used as widely as other methods, purely because the technique is "not convenient."

Passengers arriving in Beijing and a group of more than 1,000 school children and teachers who were thought to have been exposed to the virus are among the people who've undergone anal swabbing, according to Forbes.
