Taking the wife and kids (15,13,7) to ski at Mardi Gras. We have narrowed it down to Crested Butte and Keystone. Went to Copper last year and that is our only experience, so still beginner level. Is there one that stands out over the other for a family trip?

I hate Keystone, but for beginners its not bad. Peak 8 or 9 base at Breck will give you more than Keystone offers.

Edited to add what I hate about Keystone:
Too Small of a mountain
Food options in the village are limited
Night skiing sucks, especially when its cold
Not enough ski in/out options (only 1 true ski in/out)
Have not offered night Tubing since Covid

My Favorites, in order:
Telluride, Whistler....then way behind is CB, Vail, Breck and Beaver Creek

its been 10 years since I have been to either of them, but I liked crested butte better.

More to do in the town of crested butte, which is not far from the mountain.

I tend to agree with the above poster about Keystone. While I love the mountain, to me it’s not an ideal place for a family trip. Not much terrain compared with Breck and no real town outside the resort which leads to limited options. I prefer to stay nearer Breck and then ski Keystone for a day. Could also base yourself in Frisco and then drive a short distance to any of 3-4 resorts each day.

Copper was always our favorite. Stay in Breck, load the van up…ski Copper.

I grew up goign to Keystone so I am partial to it. For a family trip at beginner level, it will be the perfect mountain. I think the green run "Schoolmarm" is >3.5 miles long. Keystone is also very close to Breck and Beaver Creek

Crested Butte is obviously great too. Its a little more secluded from I-70 and has a lot of extreme terrain

Keystone isn't a town, it's a resort mountain with a small village at the base. You'll want to stay nearby in Dillon/Silverthorn, Frisco, or Breck.

Crested Butte is an awesome town and mountain.

Agree with above...stay in Silverthorn, Dillion, Brek and drive to Copper.

How do people usually get there? Rent a car after a flight to Aspen or Denver?

I know they have an airport as well but it’s much more limited, and I suspect the price of flights is more than the price of renting a car after a flight to Denver or Aspen.

Crested Butte you would fly to Gunnison. I have flown to Denver and driven to crested butte. Wouldn't recommend it (I had to stop in Denver for a few days so I didn't have an option). We had to drive over Monarch pass in white out conditions, not fun at all.

Spent Christmas in 2021 in CB. Wonderful town and great skiing. It was a brutal few days with a few feet of snow. Fantastic trip. I'd recommend CB. Flew into Gunnison. It's a quick 45 minute drive.

Crested Butte, hands down. My kids grew up skiing at CB (they are all over 29 now). I've skiied just about every mountain in Colorado and skiied CB over 20 times. Great mountain for kids and great mountain for advanced skiiers. Extreme skiing was invented in CB. Plus the crowds are significantly less in CB. Denver crowd has a hard time getting there. Denver crowd can get down I-70 to Keystone in no time. Better snow in CB, better prices in CB, better restaurants in CB and a kid friendly mountain. Fly American, Delta or United into Gunnison or fly Southwest into Montrose. A little farther drive from Montrose, but only about 30 minutes from Gunnison. We take the shuttle from Gunnison airport to Mt Crested Butte and rarely rent a car. We also drive Spring Break from Waco and it is about a 13 hour drive (12 hours from Dallas). CB is also great during the summer. Let me know if you need more information. Also skiied Keystone 4 times, but the crowds are too big and the slopes aren't very good.

One thing to keep in mind when you are planning and budgeting is the transfers to the hotel/condo from the airport. I was just looking at Breckenridge and the transfers for a family of 5 was $1,200. I would think Keystone would not be as much but that part of the budget was unexpected for me. With Crested Butte I think it would much much less because of the proximity to the airport.

It most definitely was not.

One is cheaper, easier to get to, better skiing, prettier, etc. The other is Keystone. I really like Keystone for day trips and think the mountain has some great skiing.

Condos at San Moritz are great.

ETA: CB is limited on food options. The local grocery store isn’t enough if you want a weeks worth of food. Gunnison has a nice grocery that you should stop by on your way up the road.

If you’re a beginner you’ll definitely want to ski Rambo in Crested Butte

Love CB as more of a ski town. Definitely that more authentic feeling to the town & mountain. I’d go to CB just simply off that IMO.

Keystone as other have said is not a town. However, you will be in the middle of summit county. I’d stay in Breck and then take Swan mountain road shortcut to keystone each day. You’re familiar with summit if you skied copper last year. I’d go to CB and get that experience instead.

Thanks everyone! We were leaning towards Crested Butte already, but the overwhelming response to CB confirmed it.
