Layover concern CLT to MIA, MIA to CLO (Cali, Colombia)

Traveling to Cali, Colombia in about a month and my initial flight is Charlotte to Miami, where I only have a 1 hour 6 minute 'layover' before the flight to Cali.
Flights booked together as one itinerary with American Airlines, which tells me I think this is fairly common and many people on the first flight could also be making this same connection. Not that that matters or means they'll hold the next flight if there is an issue.
CLT to MIA departs 7:07 AM anticipated to arrive 9:14 AM in Miami.
MIA to CLO departs 10:20 AM
When would the gate close for an international flight? I only need to show my Passport at the boarding gate, right? I did pay to get a seat in Row 11 in the aisle of the CLT to MIA flight, so my hope that is even if the approach to the gate is slightly delayed, that when it does get to gate, I can get off in a reasonable amount of time. Hopefully the gates are close, but I have no problem booking it; I know some of the terminals in Miami are pretty long (a literal mile in some cases).
I will only have 1 carry-on bag and maybe a personal item (backpack).

You have to exit to go from domestic to international which means going through security, right? Same or different airline? That's way too tight for me if so.

Same ticket w/ American Airlines - sorry, pretty important detail to leave out of my initial post.

Outside of your flight getting into Miami late, you are going to be just fine. AA runs the 10:20 and 6:00p dailies to CLO. AA only uses terminal D and E at MIA.
Yes, they use a facial scanner instead of boarding passes for international flights, but it is best to add it to your mobile wallet just in case.
The SkyTrain can get you anywhere in the airport in 5 minutes. Walking, you can get from gate to gate anywhere in 20.

Not for departures. He will clear TSA in CLT and won't go through a screen until customs in CLO.
On his return, he will have to clear MIA customs, then go through TSA again. Without global entry / pre-check, this process will take at least 60 minutes. I highly recommend you download the MPC app which makes customs much faster without GE.

Thanks for clarifying. I amd switching from domestic to international at JFK in June and will definitely have to exit and reenter. Different airlines and terminals but I have a long layover.

My return is Delta, CLO -> BOG -> ATL -> CLT
Scheduled to arrive ATL 3 PM and depart 5:09 PM for CLT. Hopefully that's enough time on the return...
So, when I land in Atlanta from Bogota, I would have to get through customs in enough time not to miss my 5:09 flight to Charlotte?

Leaving the country, no. All JFK terminals are connected. You would only have to go through TSA again on arrival after clearing customs. The only reason you would have to leave the terminal is if you are checking a bag between two airlines that do not have a codeshare agreement.
Otherwise, you will land in JFK, take the AirTrain to another terminal. Should be easy.

ATL handles international flights very well, and 3:00pm is not a particularly busy time for international arrivals. Two hours is plenty.
I would recommend the MPC app to expedite customs, but you should move quickly especially by not having to claim your bag.
All in all,*worse* case scenario, customs takes 45 minutes, TSA takes 30 minutes, and you still have 45 minutes to get from Terminal F via the Plane Train to wherever you are going.

I keep reading about that app but how exactly does it work? Do you just upload pictures of your passport?
Then where do I go in the airport? A special line for people that have this app? Scan a QR code?

It is an app in your phone. Before your trip, you will input your travel information including your passport. When you arrive you will open your app, and fill out your arrival information. It will ask you to take a photo. It will then give you a "pass" but it is really just a green checkmark.
Once you reach the customs area, there will be a sign and line for "MPC". You just hop in line, they scan your passport, and off you go.

At Charlotte I will just go through regular TSA right? Wouldn't even need to necessarily present my Passport then either, right? No one even usually looks at the boarding pass they just see you holding your phone out and you walk on through.
My guess is I will not present my Passport until maybe in Miami when I am boarding the flight to CLO? Or would the gate check it on the CLT to MIA flight?
I did get the app and that seems super straight forward for when I get back to Atlanta from Colombia.

You can use your passport or ID to go through TSA at CLT like any regular flight. You will have to have your passport out to board your flight in MIA for CLO. They will scan your passport and take a photo of you in order to board. You will then need your passport for customs on arrival into CLO.

The American app will require you to add your passport information (and scan it) in order to check in. It will then say "Docs ok" on your boarding pass.
Something like this:

You will have to present your passport in Charlotte. If you are listed on a connecting international flight the system will show that and ping a requirement for you to present a passport at your airport of origin. This is to prevent people from leaving home without a passport and creating a hassle when they get to their connecting gate in another city.

Won't be able to do that until 24 hours before the flight, correct? Also, I have flown to Miami before but never as a connection airport, so I am hoping it's fairly easy to navigate where exactly I need to go once I get out of my gate.
Skytrain looks good; I assume I will either be coming out of E needing to get to D or vice versa.

This is wrong. You have to provide your passport to check in. I fly internationally 10-15 times a year. As stated above, you have to provide it at check in. This is either on the app (you take a photo) or in person when checking a bag.

Correct. Just download the AA and DL apps and find your trip via record locator. AA will also email you 24 hours out to check in.

Super easy to navigate, just follow the signs to the SkyTrain which is a floor above the main concurse. The train goes in both directions and tells you location and stops.

Sweet, thanks! So, yeah, with the 9:14 AM arrival time even factoring in a slight delay in getting to the gate and some typical time to get off the plane (chose seat 11D in the aisle - $20 was worth it for a bit more peace of mind), I should have no issues getting to the connecting flight assuming the gates will close at 10:10 AM.

You will have no issues whatsoever. CLT-MIA is interhub, so they will do their best to make sure it sticks on time. I would also bet my bottom dollar that your flight from MIA is a little delayed. There are always ATC issues over the Caribbean and gulf.
