Montana in Winter - Ideas?

We've traveled to Montana a few times in the summer and absolutely love it. Mrs RaginCajunz suggested taking a winter trip. Full disclosure, it is on the list of places we'd consider living, so scoping it out in the harsh winter would help fully understand it a bit.
We've spent time in Yellowstone, Bozeman, Missoula, Kalispell, Glacier, Great Falls and driving all points in between.
Family of 4, our boys will be 9 and 11 by then are are used to travel. Any ideas how you would spend 3-4 days in December in Montana?

We've never been skiing, not opposed to trying it. Also, I'd probably shoot to fly into Bozeman just for the cost difference of Southwest flights.

from Bozeman you can get to Big Sky easy. its the biggest of the Montana ski resorts I think.

I would ski at Bridger Bowl, much cheaper than Big Sky and its right outside of Bozeman.
There is also tons of snowmobiling in Yellowstone, I would look into doing a tour. There are other tours if you don't want to snowmobile.
It can get very cold in Montana, even in December. Just be sure to have some good cold weather gear.

Big Sky would eat you for lunch

It'd be a hell of a first mountain experience that's for sure

The Yellowstone snowmobile tours are a great idea. Almost did that in March and kinda wish I had

Yeah... I think Snow Shoeing might be more my speed on a mountain like that

The town of big sky has a bunch of shops, spas, and activities for families so even if you don't want to ski there's at least enough other things to do

South LA kid here with friends in MT and WY. Went up there once in winter. ONCE.
Assuming you aren't talking about moving to a city for the following. Because IMO, the only reason to live up there is to live out on a ranch away from town.
It's hard to describe the weather but cold doesn't get it. You should 100% look into it HARD before moving there. They think nothing of getting snowed into the house for a week or two and not being able to leave. Like hurricane aftermath but every year. They have to plug their cars into the house to keep the engine blocks from cracking. Seriously.
The other scary thing about the cold is it is shockingly easy, away from town, to screw up and die. Run off into a ditch or run out of gas. You can freeze to death before you are found.
Not saying it isn't great country but it is definitely a lifestyle living up there.
I remember when I was up there that winter and I came downstairs for breakfast before we went out for the day. "What's the temperature outside?" My buddy said: "Well, it's 14 now but it's going to get cold later."

I don’t think any of the above is true except 14 degrees is not that cold.
Never had a snow day for the kids school. Never been stuck in the house.
The more it snows the more we are ready to ski or snowmobile.
Had to close our Cheyenne business for 2 days because of snow. That was a few years ago.
I’m tired of winters not because of the snow or cold, but they last from Halloween until Fathers Day.

All these mountain towns are paradise in the summer, but that is 10 weeks. Winter in these places is long, real long. To live there you have to have a love for snow sports. Visiting for a week is one thing but living in that is a different story.

Where is that?
For me, the level of cold or the amount of snow isnt the bother, its how long it lasts.
Mid-late October thru the end of May.

Baw, id say its warm if its 14 at breakfast in the winter.

They have a large ranch between Cheyenne and Laramie. They ended up buying a Snow Cat (I think that's what those tracked things are called) to get out to the highway when it snows.

Out of general curiosity and pure ignorance, how difficult is it to navigate from city to city in the winter snow? If you are in a 4 wheel drive vehicle, how treacherous is driving from Bozeman to Helena for instance? I'd imagine your interstates and major roads are fairly clear and you wouldn't encounter heavy snow driving unless you deviate from those?

Everything is day by day OP as far as weather. You really just need to experience it, by your questions I don't think you are going to like it. Snow varies just like rainfall.

Do you like to hunt?
Posted on 8/4/23 at 9:43 am to RaginCajunz
Parents live on Hebgen Lake between West Yellowstone and Big Sky. Can hunt, ice fish the lake, ski Big Sky, snowmobile everywhere including the park (highly recommend doing the park). I love being up there until around the new year. January-March are pretty rough to be honest.

We stayed at Big Sky this past March......definitely a cool place to ski, however I think it is more difficult skiing than most we are used to.....we also took a snowcoach tour of Yellowstone.
We had also planned to go dogsledding but they were booked up.
