Check out what's playing at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. It's a great way to spend an evening in DC. Another one of my favorites is a tour of the Library of Congress. And if you're Catholic, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is incredible and they give one hour guided tours. There's also a new-ish museum across the street on Pope John Paul II that's really good.
For restaurants, try Founding Farmers & Distillers.

Great views up there! Be prepared ahead of time at your 30 day mark & logged into the recreation.gov site, as advanced tickets sell out within seconds.
Well that won't work. I'm going the 1-5 of next month. So like 10 days.

The National Museum of Health & Medicine is a bit out of the way but criminally underrated. Tons of interesting exhibits and completely free.

If you have a car, harpers ferry is about an hour past dulles Airport. It is a national park on the Potomac where it meets the Shenandoah River. The whole town is in the park.

When we went, every morning they released a set amount of same-day tickets. I went down there very early before they opened and waited in line with others for tickets timed later that day. Check and see if they're still doing that.

This may end up being my cheapest trip ever depending on food.
Flights $92 round trip including fees.
Hotel - 3* a block off Dupont Circle $315 for 4 nights.
I had set a budget of $1500 for trip. Hotel may change though because it looks kinda crappy.
But I may stay under $1k. I may splurge on dining though. I like Old Ebbet grill and also want to try a Michelin place so playing with reservations now.

If going to Air and Space museum, get tickets before. There are in middle of a massive renovation. Only timed passes are allowed entry. Also half the museum is not open. So the time in the museum is a lot shorter now. Can watch the 2 films they have in the planetarium and they are cool.
Small cafe located on the ground floor. American History museum is big and that can take up a majority of your day.
If you can call ahead to Scalise office and get a VIP or private tour, that is worthwhile. I went April 2023. Had one of his staffers meet me and friend in the statue room. He gave us a private tour of the Lincoln Room ( conference room for the Majority Leader). There is a panel in the floor that leads to a stairwell bc it used to serve as old post office in the late 1800s. Everything is sealed shut now but he gave us sharpies to write our names on the wall.

I made reservations at Moon Rabbit and Jaleo. Going to Gursha Ethiopian for dinner tonight.
I fly into Baltimore then take train to DC then metro to Dupont Circle.
After dinner I plan to rent an E bike and check it the memorials at night.

check out the Phillips Collection
I second the Phillips. It's a former mansion and feels homier than the purpose-built art museums. Once the tourist season slows down, the Phillips and other museums have free (or low fee) events on weekends...check for online calendars.
Dunbarton Oaks in Georgetown is similar but featuring pre-Columbian and Byzantine art along with spacious gardens. Originally before DC was created, it was a plantation on the Potomac at the mouth of Rock Creek. The grand home has been used for diplomatic conferences. Bicycle might work around there. Like rest of GT it's not convenient to Metro.
Tomb of the Unknowns is an easy Metro trip.
National Building Museum is a less-visited place where you go more to marvel at the building rather than study the exhibits. Outside it's just an unattractive big ugly brick building. Inside is "wow".
I've stopped recommending restaurants since Covid has changed so many. Old Ebbet Grill across from Treasury survives. Have an early dinner at the bar with a serious drink. It's more fun in the spring when they offer fried shad roe, but the food is fine all year.
DC solo is the best way.

Old Ebbitt Grill is great. Bombay Club is great if you like Indian food and it’s a fun place to go too.

I really enjoy the monuments and the mall. I Ike the holocaust and American history museums. Mt Vernon is my fav place to have visited. And although it would take all day Gettysburg is awesome.
I have done it solo and with a tour guide. The tour guide made it so much more fun, there is a lot to the city that they know and really make it interesting.
