Going to NY on the 19th and I’m trying to get our itinerary finalized. Here’s what I got. Let me know if there is anything else worth adding to this.

Sunday - Top of the Rock, Times Square (I know it’s touristy)
Monday - circle line cruise around Manhattan, Intrepid Museum, might walk the High Line.
Tuesday - Brooklyn Bridge bike tour, 9/11 museum (maybe), Tonight Show taping.
Wednesday - Central Park, MONH, MJ on Broadway.
Thursday - Empire State Building, Transit Museum, Yankees/Astros game.

We fly in/out of LaGuardia and are planning to use the LIRR to go to and from. Also planning to use the Metro North to go the the Bronx on Thursday. It’s a first trip to NY so any tips or advice would be appreciated. I’m well aware of the rise in crime so I’m not trying to have that discussion, we plan to stay off of the Subway. Thanks in advance for any input.

Comedy show. Need to hit a comedy show.

One trip we went to see Dave Attell at the Comedy Cellar. And they had a unannounced guest to start it off. It was Louis CK

Next day we were getting ready to go out and SNL started. Louis CK was the host and his monologue was a condensed version of his show the night before. I guess he wanted to fine tune his act.

That’s why I enjoy visiting NYC. shite like that happens.

Why maybe to 9/11 museum? It’s one of the best things to see in the city. If you’re down by BB, check out the tenement museums!

I read it can be an intense experience and leave you quite sad. I found that it’s closed on Tuesdays so we are going to schedule it on Thursday.

I'm here right now, using the trains all the time even at 11-12 at night, no issues. It's rather enjoyable

Yeah. There’s no reason to avoid the subway.

If I were op, I’d skip the museum of natural history. It’s very dated. I’d do the Met or Cloisters instead. No 9/11 museum for me either. I lived up here for that, and don’t care to relive it.

Should we do the MET or MOMA and would you replace the Natural History Museum with one of these?

I’d add the Met museum for sure. It’s huge, so pick what you want to see. If you could possibly do Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, that’s pretty cool too.

This is going to be a tough day. Midtown to BK to the Bronx is quite a commute.

Not sure about your aversion to the subway. You'll have to take a public bus from LGA to get to a LIRR station. The subway is extremely convenient.

Transit Museum is closed that day so we are doing 9/11 that day instead. Still may be a long day but the game is not until 7 PM.

Yes we would have to take the Lagardia Link to the nearest station.

Between the Top of the Rock and Empire State Building, I would pick only one unless you really wanted to do both, they are both observation decks in midtown. You could probably pair the Statue of Liberty and 9/11 Museum on the same day if you wanted to do both, even add Ellis Island. The Met is wonderful, pick a few sections you want to explore because it is massive.

maybe? really?

Don't do both Empire State Building and Top of the Rock. Just pick one and do something else with your time.

Staying off the Subway is just ridiculous. It's the best way to get around NYC and most people that live there take it regularly.

The Met is the most impressive. MOMA is fine. Both are better than the NHM.

You have the MJ show which I would be thrilled to see, but if you haven’t seen it I couldn’t recommend Come From Away more. Ideally don’t read anything about it and just know it’s a true story and just wonderful.

It isn’t the best museum but I always think the Frick is a good thing to keep in the back of your mind if you want to go inside and avoid the crowds of the bigger museums.

Also - google events in New York the weekend you’ll be there. Our last trip coincided with The rare book show for collectors the world over. It was awesome to walk through. There are always things like that happening in the city.

Agreed, we just got back from NYC a few days ago and took the subway everywhere, even with 4 kids in tow. $33 gets you a 7 day pass. Not one time did I feel unsafe doing it even at night and after a night Yankees game as well coming from Bronx. Hell, the area around Times Square with all the weed peddling was more sketchy than the subway.

One of the highlights of our trip was right after the Music Man with Hugh Jackman, he comes out of the stage door and greets all the fans up close and personal as he’s going to his car to leave. Pretty cool experience if you’re into that sort of thing.
