Heading to Boston then Maine in July. A friend recommended visiting Newport, RI while in the area, but I am not sure as it is the complete opposite direction (planning to fly in to Boston) when headed to Maine. Other than the mansions, what else is there to see/do that woudl be better than Mass/Maine? We will be in the area for 12-14 days and just not sure if it is worth heading back that direction. Thanks

I enjoyed Newport.

The thing we did was walk the trail along the waterfront that abuts the back yards of the mansions. It was an enjoyable way to spend a half of a day. How far out of my way I would go to do that is another question. Bar Harbor is nice too.

How many days will you be in Boston? Newport is a great area and it can be done as a day trip (it's about a 1.25hr drive) from Boston, but if you only have 2-3 days in Boston I wouldn't recommend it. But if you have 5-6, it's worth considering. But it's also not a required stop when you're up here, IMO.

it's not that far from Boston and is a good day trip even if you are going up to Maine

Have done both before on same trip

If you do make the trip down to Newport, I highly recommend having lunch (or dinner) at The Mooring and getting the Bouillabaisse for two. It was delicious.

Newport is a great day trip from Boston. It’s a full day. Mansions, coast, shopping, dining and sightseeing of the area. I think I’d avoid trying to do that IF I was also doing Maine. Unless you are doing 2 weeks or so for the trip.
