Looking for any good recommendations for an early dinner prior to a Broadway show. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Flexible on the cuisine. Not picky at all, just looking for good food/atmosphere

I wouldn’t limit yourself to just the midtown/theater district for dinner. Lots of restaurants have specific reservations and expedited menus for people going to see a show.

Thanks for the information. I haven’t been to NYC as an adult, so I am a little overwhelmed. That is helpful info though!

Happy to help - it’s a lot. So many options it can be paralyzing.

Honestly we just popped in to what looked good and wasn’t crowded. We’re not foodies and are easy to please.

Friend,

The best steakhouses in the area and both with impeccable atmosphere are Keens and Gallagher’s. I prefer the atmosphere at the former and the food at the latter, but either is excellent on both.

For pizza, the new Roberta’s and attached R Slice next to Penn Station are wonderful if you want pizza. There is a lovely outdoor balcony for seating as well as a very nice indoor room. R Slice is serving the best slice on Manhattan today, and that’s saying something considering there has never been a better time to eat slices in NY, with the rise of slice shops like Upside, L’industrie, Mamas Too, Cello’s, Lucia’s, Scarr’s and Williamsburg Pizza. Upstairs is Roberta’s, which serves Neapolitan style rather than NY slices. There are better Neapolitan pizzas in the area such as Don Antonio.

If you’re looking for vegan and vegetarian, I found Beyond Sushi to be really good. See TulaneLSU’s top ten things eaten on a 77 mile walk through New York recently for details. The atmosphere was cozy and quiet. The Polo Ckub just off Fifth has one of the best atmospheres in town, but you likely will not be able to get reservations unless you know someone. I love the simplicity of the Yale Club as well, but you will either need to be a member or be with a member to enter. If Uncle is in town while you are I could pass along your contact information if you would like to join him.

There is no reason to limit your dining only to that area though. A twenty minute walk gives you every Midtown possibility, which is better than all the restaurants in the South, outside New Orleans, combined. Le Bernardin is the best seafood restaurant in the world and is just a stone’s throw from Broadway.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

We were there in August and we ate at Le Rivage before our show, it’s a charming little French restaurant with amazing food and stellar service. Very romantic inside, but not stuffy

Their crème brûlée was the best I’ve ever had

We tend to avoid trying to pack in dinner and a show for a night show and just eat a late lunch. When we see a matinee we will have dinner later. I don’t like being rushed through dinner or having somewhere to get to afterwards.
That being said depending on number of people there are lots of options in midtown.

If there are four or more I like Carmines (two midtown locations) for Italian. Portions are huge and meant to be eat family style. I always associate going to Carmines with the family after the theater when I was young. Eataly is in the area. I’ve enjoyed that a few times.

Bar Centrale on 46th next to Joe Allen's is a great little bar for pre or post theater drinks. They have food, but the atmosphere and cocktails are the reason to go. Due to its small size, reservations are recommended, but if you get there at 5 you can usually get a couple of seats at the bar.

As mentioned Gallaghers is a good option as is Aldo Sohm wine bar across from Le Bernardin.

And here is the Eater NYC theater district map. LINK

Few years ago when we went we ate at Toloache, a mexican place, didn't think it would be good, but surprisingly was. We also ate at Joe Allen, small old school restaurant that was really good.

We went to Becco several years ago before the theater. It was a great meal and location.

Agree!

Solid sport after the show. There is not a sign, you walk up up some stairs and it looks like you’re walking into somebody’s private residence.

Find a Restaurant called Orso, it’s right above it

I’m a weirdo I guess, but I love going to Los Tacos No 1 before shows. It’s delicious. You may wait a bit but I love their food. And you can walk to most shows pretty easily from there.

I give Gallagher's another vote. Steaks are excellent. Cool atmosphere and very close.
