Pagosa Springs vs South Fork, Co (Wolf Creek)

We went to Durango/Purgatory last year and enjoyed it, but have heard good things about Wolf Creek. Which town is better to stay? Also, I heard the roads can be dangerous, can anyone relate?

We go to South Fork just about every year to ski at Wolf Creek. Great skiing...
South Fork has absolutely nothing to do at night. We are a big group that rents a large cabin or group of cabins. We spend the evenings cooking and playing cards or something. There is nothing to do...
I believe Pagosa is a little bigger town, but I am not sure the apres ski options are any better.
The roads are just as dangerous as any mountain pass in the winter. Be as cautious as you can, and don't ever get comfortable. It is a 20-30 minute drive to the mountain from South Fork, stay focused.

Went to WC a couple years ago and stayed in South Fork as it was cheaper for lodging and their side of the pass historically is less likely to close during heavy snow. As the poster above said, South fork is very basic with just a gas station, small grocery store, some lodging and maybe a couple of restaurants. Pagosa has more places to eat/drink/shop and I believe hot springs. Stay in Pagosa if you need to eat out or want some options for other activities. South fork if you are on a no frills budget trip and want to minimize the risk of missing a ski day due to the pass being closed.

Pagosa does seem to have a lot to offer for such a small town.

I would say pagosa springs. We have a cabin in creede which is kind of around south fork so we just stay there when we go. But we’ve made trips to pagosa for the hot springs and there’s definitely more to do there than in south fork.
As far as roads, we go over la veta pass to get to the cabin and it can get pretty sketchy with fog and ice/snow but I’m not sure if you would have to take that route. Never had much issue with wolf creek pass personally but I’m sure it can get hairy. Just drive carefully and watch for ice.
