Puerto Rico With Kids - Safe? Recommendations?

Hey guys, in the early stages of planning a trip for Spring Break '25 and right now we're thinking Puerto Rico. Anyone been recently? Recommendations? How long should we stay? We were thinking in the 7-10 day range. Looking to rent a car and use 2 (maybe 3) "bases" - so 4 or 5 nights in one place and 4 or 5 nights in another. We'd prefer to be out of the city - maybe do San Juan one night to spend some time in Old Town, but that's about it.
Also (and this is the biggest thing) is the island safe? We'll have two young kids.
Would spending one night on Vieques be worth it?

We went over Thanksgiving week two years ago and it was amazing. We had our then 5 year old son with us and never felt unsafe.
Stayed at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar for a few days where we went to Old San Juan, the El Yunque National Forest, and explored the local beaches. We did go to Vieques for two days, which was the highlight of the trip for us. The beaches were great and the night kayaking in the bioluminescence bay was a cool experience.

That is great to hear! Did y’all fly or take the ferry too Vieques? Why y’all got on the island did y’all rent a car?
If you have any specific req’s (particular beaches, hikes, etc.) we’d love to hear!
Our oldest will be about your sons age but our youngest may be to young to kayak (more like a lap child) but that’s something we’ll have to talk about. Was the water calm?

I have to vent. I’m so tired of hearing people in some of the unsafest states in the US ask about safety overseas. The truth is that it’s just as if not more safe than where you come from or live if you have a shred of common sense.

We flew from Cieba. It was about a 15 minute flight vs the hassle of the ferry. We rented golf cart for a day and then switched it out for a car due to the heat. Really glad we did because the car was faster and the AC was a nice relief . Let me go through some pictures and see what beaches we did in Vieques. On the main island we just did the beach at our hotel and Luquillo Beach. The Vieques beaches had no waves

I took 2 bullet holes to my truck the night I arrived back from my vacation in puerto rico.

Awesome, thank you! We’ll plan on doing the car route vs. golf cart! Still up in the air if we’ll fly or ferry. Was the flight cost reasonable?

A lot of people CC when out in big US cities but when traveling they don't have that added sense of security. And criminals know that

I think it was about $250-300 roundtrip for the 3 of us.

I'm not certain about Vieques but Culebra was incredible, specifically Flamenco Beach. I could definitely enjoy a few days on Culebra. We went with a Jeep instead of golf cart and it was a ton of fun.

Awesome! We’ll look into both and decide between the two! Our plan is to do a jeep vs. car. Did that recently with a trip to San Diego and were so glad we made the choice!

Spent a week in Isla Verde. It was very safe and the beach was amazing. Spent one day walking around Old San Juan and toured the castle. Very enjoyable but the city streets can be very steep, good walking shoes recommended. We did one day trip to Playa Puerto Nuevo. Great beach with clean restrooms and beach chair/umbrella rentals. Food trucks were a short walk away. In my opinion Puerto Rico is underrated.

Nah. Just exercise the same care you would in any city and you should be fine almost anywhere. Don't go off away from where most of the tourists are. Don't walk somewhere very quiet and unfamiliar at night...heck, I don't even do that in the day. I don't do it in Houston and I wouldn't do it in another country.
How many times have you flashed that pew pew in the US? Criminals don't have a clue who is cc-ing. Look like you're paying attention and know where you're going. I've mostly traveled either alone or with my daughter (no pics) and no one has ever bothered us.
The only time I've been scared when away from home was years ago when I traveled to LA alone right after the Rodney King riots. I thought Western Street looked like a short cut from Gardena to Beverly Hills. Not a great idea! People are paranoid. We are mostly safer than we used to be.
