Planning on a long weekend to do some hiking in Arkansas. Thought about staying in Mt Nebo or Petit Jean St Park. Looks like some scenic trails in those parks. Coming from BR, so looks like a 7 hour drive. Anywhere else to consider? Going late September. TIA.

Wife and I did some day hiking in Petit Jean, some interesting trails. It had been dry so the waterfalls weren't flowing. The cave with the cave drawings was cool. Mt Nebo has some cool mountain bike trails, but didn't hike there. If you camp there, they have overlooks for sunrise and sunset that are good photo ops. Also hiked @ Devil's Den state park, lots of caves and openings that are cool. I want to go back in the springtime, because nw Arkansas seems to get pretty dry in the summer and fall. The "river" in Devil's Den was down to a few pools in September of 2021 when I was there.

I’ve hiked and stayed overnight in both Nebo and Petit Jean. I’ve also hiked a couple of trails on Mt. Magazine which has the highest peak of Arkansas.

Mt. Nebo is small almost Mesa /plateau type mountain. 2 or 3 trails that kind of rim around the mountain. It can be done in a day or 2 easily.

Petit Jean has much better and more scenic trails including the waterfall and seven hollows trail and the one behind the old cabin is really fun. There is also an Indian Cave and lots of rocks to climb near the lodge. I really like Petit JEan. There is also the overlook by the grave of Petit Jean and an old car museum on Petit Jean. PJ has the most to do of all. Nebo is cool but much smaller and less overall to do by far. I’d stay on PJ and go to the others on day trips.

Mt. Magazine I only did a couple of small trails since it was covered in ice.

All three are about 30 minutes apart and I’ve done all 3 in one trip. The Old cabins on Nebo are fun. MT. MAgazine has neat ones too. Going up and back from BR takes FOREVER! We go straight up from BR.

Add a little more drive time and hit trails around the Buffalo River instead. Goat Trail, Hemmed in Hollow.

If you go to the buffalo region, Whitaker point is pretty cool.

This summer has been very wet so far. May be one of the rainiest July’s I can remember. Everything should still be flowing this year.

We traveled to NWA a couple of years ago. Did not get in much hiking due to weather system that rolled through, although we did see some beautiful leaf color. The one thing stressed in all of my trip research was to prep for ticks. Locals recommended using a spray with picaridin, and treating clothes thoroughly before heading out. Have fun! It’s a beautiful state.

Something I learned as a kid, is to use "flowered sulphur" to keep ticks away. Just put a little in your socks and some around your waist in your underwear. Ticks will not get on you using this.

sulphur sock…dusting sulphur from the garden center in an old sock. Slap it on your boots, socks, pants legs

We took a couple of trips to Petit Jean St Park, 50 years ago when the kids were young. What I remember most was the fishing. I had brought my small boat, but learned that no outboard engines were allowed so I had to use the trolling motor.

I went out fishing for an hour with no luck. After supper we took a walk and ran into a park ranger. He suggested I try trolling down the middle of the lake because that is where the old creek is located.

The next day, I got out on the water and made several passes down the lake and caught about a dozen 1 to 1.5 lb Sac-o-lay.

We went back 2 years later and I was looking forward to catching more. But this time I only caught small Sac-o-lay. I talked to a ranger and learned that the lake had been drained to make some repairs.

The campgrounds were very nice and great view of the lake.

Jasper area is the best in Arkansas for hiking. The Buffalo River, Buzzards Roost trail with slot canyons and turtle backs, the Gloryhole….haha. We stay 10 mins north of Jasper in Dogpatch. Everything we do is within 30 mins.
