I know this is travel board but I rather post here than OT.
My s/o got a nice job offer out there for double the pay she makes in Baton Rouge. We are both late 20s no kids. Wouldn’t mind making a change of scenery.
Has anyone been to Redding? The outdoor scene looks awesome. Conservative city despite being in Cali. We are both active & social. Thanks for any input!

Why not? You’re still going to have to put up with California crazy, though.
She may be making double, but it won’t go as far as it would in BTR. You might go out and visit and look at total cost of living.
If you’re not married, I’d worry about going out there and the relationship ending especially if she’s making substantially more than you. Women say they don’t care if they make more than you, but they do.

Redding is nice especially if you like the outdoors.

Seems like outdoorsy stuff would be the main attraction to living there. It's relatively small and isolated but lot's of good natural scenery within driving distance. And the weather is pretty good too - they get the second most days of sunshine in the US and daytime temps rarely move above 90 or below 40.
But there are a lot of homeless and some sketchy characters there too. The Emerald Triangle (the agricultural center of marijuana production in this country) is nearby and it attracts a lot of crazy or transient people who think they will salvage their life in the pot business but most of them wash out or never get a foot in the door.
Double the pay sounds nice but that kind of depends on what the pay was to begin with and what type of career prospects it opens. CA has high taxes and a high COL, even in the red areas.
Do you anticipate a lot of travel - for pleasure or to visit friends and family back South? Redding's regional airport only has a few limited options and you're a long drive from a major city like Sacramento, San Francisco or Reno.

Probably back to Louisiana once a year. we do plan on doing more roadtrips and such while out there.
I started networking & It seems like there will be good opportunity for me to find a job in my sales field (med or pharma). We are visiting there in May, her ‘future employer’ is flying us out there
On the outside Redding seems great. Just big enough to have most things while having beautiful scenery.

Yeah I would not think twice about this, go and don’t look back.

Look man anytime an opportunity presents itself to get the frick out of Louisiana you take it. It doesnt matter where the destination is it will be better.

She’ll be making double the pay with triple the expenses.
The pay there doesn’t go far enough to make up for the cost of living.

But at least Redding has mountains & scenery. Louisiana feels like living in a blue state regardless if it votes red

Don’t listen to the doomers. Redding is great and you’ll be two hours from Trinidad and Arcata. Your quality of life will exponentially increase coming from the swamp. It’s beautiful country.

Its sad (and a little funny) people dont know they live in a third world shite hole.
We did Christmas in Monterey last year and my sister made a gumbo, tasted better in California.

Had a few work trips in the area. The scenery is indeed amazing. And if y'all fish, the Pit River is some of the best fishing out west, but you have to use barbless hooks and release everything.
Gas prices are nuts, $7/ gallon last time I was there. Keep in mind that double pay will not be as double after Cali taxes, gas prices, COL, etc...
You're not far from Tahoe, and Lassen National Park. The outdoor options are incredible there. Also Sierra Nevada tap room is an hour or so away. I was never into their Pale Ale but straight off the brewery its amazing.
Redding itself is small and boring. San Francisco used to be a fun big city to visit but I haven't been in five years or so and I hear its not as cool as it once was. Sacramento kinda sucks.
I would definitley spend a long weekend out there in Redding and see what its like before making that move.
Also for what its worth, there are some shady things going on around there. First, to the west is a huge cannabis grow region. I know guys in that business. They will be the first person to tell you not to be randomly driving around and get lost in the grow areas. The "locals" dont like visitors. Also up in the mountains like around Chalk Mountain I have heard of some shady stuff. The jobsite contacts (reputable people at PG&E, not some random wierdo) told us not to go any further into the mountains than the jobsite, that there are strange folks that don't want to be found way back inland.

Lived in Modoc County and South Lake Tahoe. Northern California is awesome. Now for hunting big game... Well blacktail on the coast is about it. Not getting a mule deer tag in those parts. Good trout fishing and duck hunting in the right areas.
Lava Beds NP, Redwoods NP, Trinity mountains, Lake Tahoe, and much more amazing outdoor activites are within a 1/2 day drive for you. Bouldering, Rock Climbing, Hiking, Backpacking, Skiiing......
Will it be expensive for some things? Yes. Does CA have screwy politics? Yes. But rural Northern CA which is predominately ranchers and farmers is every bit as conservative as anywhere in Louisiana. Their votes get watered down by SF, LA, and other cites.
Take the move.

Don’t forget the Bethel Church. Could be a positive for the OP if he is into cults and crazy people.

Redding is dope and is unlike the rest of California, but you'll still be subject to the state taxes, ridiculous prices of consumer products including gas, and wildfire issues. You would likely need more like 3x salary to break even.
Side note: If the job opportunity is with PG&E, I would think twice and maybe three times before accepting.
