Try North Toledo Bend State Park. Went about 10 years ago during the summer. About 4 hours drive time from Baton Rouge with camper, if I recall correctly.

If you're bringing young kids, there are nice hiking trails, a playground, and big swimming pool.

My secret spot - Clear Springs Recreational Area
No reservations, and I've never seen it full outside of deer hunting season.
$20 a night drop box

quote:

Nestled among pine covered hills, you will find a cool, 12-acre spring-fed lake, which offers a variety of recreation opportunities for everyone. Camping, swimming, fishing and picnicking are available at the lake and four mountain bike and hiking trails begin within the recreation area. This area has steep terrain. The roads within the recreation area are paved with slopes greater than 8 percent.

Fully accessible cement access routes connect the parking area, pavilion, amphitheater and restrooms. There are no accessible routes to the beach or fishing areas. The bathhouses are fully accessible. Some accessible campsites and accessible parking spaces are available. Boat trailers are prohibited.

Clear Springs has good hiking and is usually not super crowded. Cool little lake as well.

Are you tent camping, or RV camping?
Clear Springs has an upper and a lower camping area.

The upper campground is VERY hilly with mostly smaller spots.
Perfect for tents, popup campers, or smaller RV's.

The lower campground is a large flatter area that can fit larger A Class RV's.

McLeod Park over around Kiln, MS is really nice. It’s right on the jourdan river with a boat launch if you want that. Nice playground and splash pad for younger kids. There’s an older retired guy that converted an old ambulance into a snowball truck and rides through the park on weekends. Every time I see that snowball truck, I tell my wife that’s what I want to do when I retire!

Have been in a while but Rocky Springs on the Trace has a few good campsite if you get there early. It's primitive campsite with only water and toilets but we tented camped, so it was always fun.

This campground is an hour north of Natchez, MS, and an hour south of Jackson, Ms. Campground sites are on a first come first served basis, no reservations.

On Pensacola Beach there is a fort at the western tip. The western end is a national park. They have camping sites for rent. The beaches are great there. Since it is a np, it keeps the riff raff out.LINK
