Should I be concerned traveling to Mexico later this month after the arrest of El Chapo’s son? Is all the violence and unrest just localized to Sinaloa? I’ll be in San Miguel.

No, there's drug violence in a number of places in Mexico. The good news, though, is that tourists (unless they are buying drugs) are largely untouched by it. I have never been to San Miguel, but my guess is that it is like many other places in Mexico in that the touristy areas get extra police and are safe, and the poorer areas, the bad neighborhoods, is where you have to watch out.

For those of us in South Louisiana, keep in mind that New Orleans, with the nation's highest murder rate, will almost certainly place among the top ten most dangerous cities in the world for 2022.

Mexico City, for example, is relatively safe, and the murder rate in New Orleans will be seven times as high as the rate in Mexico City. But I still wouldn't visit the famous Tepito market or some other crime-ridden areas.

In other words, in San Miguel, don't get drunk alone at night and get lost on your way back to your hotel, and then wander into a bad neighborhood. And don't buy drugs.

If you don't do stupid stuff, you'll be safer in most parts of Mexico than you will in New Orleans or Baton Rouge.

I'm sure the fine leaders of Mexico are super diligent in reporting murder statistics and while I know NO is super corrupt in reporting crime numbers (armed robberies and such) I'd like to believe they're not getting away with keeping too many murders off the books (at least I hope).

The fine leaders in Mexico don't have a problem reporting high crime in other areas. The five most dangerous cities in the world in 2019 were all in Mexico.

Take a look.

Our pathetic journalists are infatuated with finding some drug battle somewhere in Mexico, and blowing it up into a story here in the US

Go.

And report back with a trip of you and pictures!

I'm here in San Miguel now. This is my first trip to this city and we are 3 females. It feels very safe. We are staying right on the parque benito juarez in a home, but walked around the area last night. Ate on the roof of the rosewood hotel. No sign of the sinaloa cartel. Judging by the way the other tourists are behaving and dressed I'd say the area is very low crime.

The difference is the cartels aren’t stupid. Tourists bring American dollars to invigorate the economy to invigorate their product. If tourists don’t come, dollars don’t come. Theyre probably more effective than the police in the tourist areas

I felt safer in Cancun than any place in New Orleans in the last ten years.

Mexico is wonderful to visit. It’s practically it’s own continent with as varied a landscape and climate that you can find in the world. And it’s people are the kindest most friendly and genuine that I have ever come across

spend a week in Mexico and then contemplate the living conditions where you are. Not first world shite just basic happiness and beauty. Mexico wins on that

Leaving for San Miguel this week. Will be there for a wedding. Anything that's a must-see? Really want to see a bullfight, but can't find too much info online.
