Going to Napa area for a wedding in Mid-May next year… the Mrs and I are looking into going a few days early & do some exploring.

Any recommendations on towns or places to visit to burn a few days in Central Cali? We like to do outdoor things & rather stay on the countryside. We are thinking Yosemite too.

Head to Golden Gate, Muirwoods, Bodega Bay and Hwy 1 all between. Point Reyes Lighthouse and park is great. This can all be seen in 1 day drive from Napa.

Yosemite is a LONG haul from Napa mainly due to the difficult roads and elevations getting there. It’s worth it if you can stay in the park, but plan on staying a few nights. The above

If you're goign to drive 2+ hours east to get to the mountains, you might as well go a bit further and go to Lake Tahoe.

The wife and I love Calistoga. That little town is at the top of the Napa Valley.
Our favorite dining place is Brasswood Winery restaurant in St. Helena. Get the mozzarella cheese cooked in olive oil with brochettes. Its an off menu item and is great. They plate it for you. They also let you bring in one bottle of your favorite wine with no corking fee. Just tip the waiter or bartender (we sit at the bar area) extra for doing so. Other great food options too.

Mendocino and the hwy 128 leading into it are pretty nice with the orchards, redwoods, wineries etc. Then you spill out to the headlands, rivers, parks, inlets.

About 3 hours from downtown Napa.

The Sierra foothills are great. Go up IH80 past Sacramento to auburn. Take hwy 49 south to Placerville. Half way is a small community called Coloma. This is where gold was discovered at sutters mill. It is on the American River. People still pan for gold there. This is called the gold country. Beautiful country.LINK . LINK . Continue on south to Placerville, a very nice town.
