The wife and I love COL in the winter but have only been to the BREK area and want to try telluride, looks like roughly the same distance in the car from DEN, PHX and salt lake.
Any recommendations on which airport to use? What’s the easiest ride? Prettier ride? Decent places to stop along the way?
Also. How’s skiing in telluride? I love to ski but certainly no expert. Just the blue and green
Thanks!!

We are going in February and flying into Montrose. I’ve never been so I can’t help with anything else.
Southwest had the best flights out of Nola. I hate SW but it be what it be.

I would fly into Montrose or even telluride itself. Denver air connection will take you to telluride right from the Denver airport. You wouldn’t even need a car at that point and couldn’t potentially save yourself the headache of a winter drive. Worth doing a cost analysis imo.
Skiing in telluride is legit. It’s my favorite resort to go to. Lots of beginner stuff but it can get really advanced as well with some hike to terrain and gnarly chutes.
Are you staying in town or on the mountain? Telluride is incredible in which the town & mountain are connected via a quick gondola ride so getting to either is very easy. When I say in town to mountain, it’s actually that. No driving 5-10 to a parking lot in town… actually downtown telluride.

Telluride is amazing. It is one of my favorite places on this earth. For skiing, the mountain is great with terrain for all levels. The views are unbelievable as well (especially skiing down the gondola line towards the main town). Also, the town is a true mountain town unlike Vail. The restaurant and bar scene, including nightlife, is also great. I think Aspen, Vail and Breck are 'slightly' better, but it is right up there with them. My only beef with the skiing part is that the mountain (in terms of acreage) is on the smaller side when compared to other CO resorts. Especially Vail. We typically run out of new areas to ski on day 3 at Telluride. As far as getting there, you need to fly into Montrose and drive about 1.5 hours. I have heard that some people fly to Durango and then it's about a 2.0 hour drive. The town and the views really make Telluride special. The town is nestled in a box canyon with steep mountains surrounding it on 3 sides. One road in, one road out. It's extremely picturesque. There is a mountain village (over the ridge and up the mountain from the town) that is newer and includes upscale resorts. My suggestion is to stay in town though on your first trip just for that experience. Telluride is a place I recommend everyone experience once. Just don't plan on skiing like 6-7 days. You'll run out of terrain.
Posted that yesterday in the Big Sky thread (that got slightly derailed).

We went last year and flew into Montrose. The drive to Telluride was very scenic and enjoyable. Not to much to detour off to visit on the drive, but, no need for that. The drive is very picturesque.
Beautiful town with lots to do.

pay the extra money to fly into montrose.
i wouldn't want to be in the car for six hours each way. could be a rough drive that time of year.
telluride will probably be your favorite place after this trip. the skiing is great.

Telluride is the best town in Colorado, winter and especially summer. Fly into Montrose for sure. Driving from Montrose to Telluride, you'll be going along a stretch of the Million Dollar Highway from Montrose, through Ridgeway and Placerville, onto Telluride. Along the Hwy 62 section of that, just west of Ridgeway, you'll pass Ralph Lauren's massive Double RL Ranch that sprawls from Highway 62 south to the Sneffels Range. Telluride is on the backside of that range, which you'll drive around.
But it will look more like this from the highway during winter.
The town is an amazing old mining town, tons of restaurants, bars, and shops. There's also a mountain village near the base of the ski hill with resorts, condos, bars, restaurants, breweries, shops, etc as well, which has a free gondola that takes you back and forth from the mountain village down to town as someone above mentioned.
One thing I highly recommend is booking sunset happy hour/dinner at Allred's Restaurant, which is along that commuter gondola at the top of the ridge, before the steep drop down into town. Panoramic window views of the sun setting over the western peaks is amazing. Get the dry aged bison ribeye. If you already know what dates you'll be in town, make your reservation now. They book out well ahead. We got lucky one time and popped in, had some drinks at the bar for an hour or two, and there was a no-show for a 2-top table. Definitely don't rely on getting that lucky though. Book as soon as you can.
We've stayed in town, and twice at the Peaks Resort up in the village, both summer and winter. We love the Peaks Resort, especially the golf course there, but that's obviously out for winter. It's a great resort in the winter as well.
Oh ya, Telluride is super expensive. Everything is. I'd say a little more expensive than Aspen actually. But I like Telluride a lot more than Aspen. If you have the funds and are OK with the higher expense of Telluride, you won't regret going and will quickly be making plans to go back in the summer (Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Telluride Blues and Brews Fesitval).

Fly into Montrose and book a shuttle. I just booked one last week for around $75. You won't need a car. The gondola serves both Telluride and Mountain Village, so you can go everywhere you need to that way.
We stayed in Telluride last year (Telluride Lodge) and are staying there again this year. Lift 7 is right across the street, and everything in town is walking distance.
Get the Epic Day Pass. It's much cheaper than buying lift tickets from the resort. The skiing is great. The mountain is geared toward intermediate to expert, although there are plenty of beginner slopes. The views of the town from the slopes are amazing. And the mountain is less crowded than many others in CO.
Try Brown Dog Pizza.

Love Telluride. Never any lift lines and a really fun mountain especially off Lift 9. I always like staying in Telluride vs mountain village but can't go wrong with either. Best part is once you are there you never have to get in a car till you leave.

What’s the best service to use getting to/from Montrose airport?

We used Telluride Epxress. Easy peasy. They have share shuttles and private offerings.

Fly into Montrose, TEX is mostly private aviation but there are a few small commercial flights from DEN. If the weather gets just a little squirley they divert everything to Montrose anyway. If you like Breck, you will Love Telluride. It has the beauty and town of Breck with way less people. We had a condo in mountain village for almost 10 years. I regret selling it even though it was the right move.

I was up there a few months ago for work. Did some hiking in Silverton, Mesa Verde, drove the whole San Juan Skyway.
If you fly in to Durango, every way to get to Telluride is a scenic drive. clockwise would be less white knuckle, but counter clockwise and the million dollar Highway is probably incredible in the winter.
But if there was any weather at all your trip could get fricked.

Any recommendations on ski rentals in Mountain Village?

Been twice. Stayed in town once and in mountain village the other time. In Mountain Village, we used Christy's Sports right by the gondola and Tomboy Tavern. The location was perfect.

Fly into Montrose and drive from there. We went in July and that is what we did. United has direct flights to Denver and Houston, AA flies to DFW and I believe PHX, Delta and Southwest fly into the airport as well.
