HI,
Can anyone suggest some vacation ideas for4-5 days in July in Pacific NW or California? Flights should be from MSY. Open to all suggestions including just city adventure or taking day trips around. My family (2+1 teen) has limited interest in sports or wine tours. More nature or museum fans.
Thanks

You can get a direct flight from MSY to Seattle. That would be nice

Thanks. Seattle is in short list. How will it compare to San Fransico or Oregon? Teen child has never been to these places and I wish to give him some unique experience before he leaves for college.

July is the best month in WA. Rain is done and there are a ton of outdoor activities. What sorts of things are you looking for? Hiking? WTA has a website which shows all of the possible hikes in Washington LINK. There's plenty of kayaking, fishing, museums in downtown Seattle, space needle, chihuly gardens, whale watching to keep you busy for 4-5 days.
Take the ferry over to Bremerton to see the sound, car shows, usually weekend fairs

I'd opt for Seattle. Tons of outdoors activities in the surrounding area

Thanks. Would July 4 weekend be ok, or we should go a week later?
If we land in Seattle, what is certainly must see around for a 4-5 day trip?
Any suggestions for cabins?

The joke when i lived there is the last rain potential was 7/4, but i remember having mostly awesome 4th of July's there with great weather. I'd probably suggest the following weekend if you can swing it, should be less crowded. However if you've got vacation time for the 4th itself, might be worth saving that day and going then.

This is where your suggestions are going to need to be tailored. What are your priorities for your family to do and see?
Do you want outdoorsy stuff or the city? 4-5 days is not going to be a lot for both but my suggestion would be focus on the outdoors stuff with maybe a day for the city.
Are you renting a car? If so, know that parking in downtown seattle can be tougher than parking in the surrounding suburbs and it usually costs $

This we'll need help with from others on here. I usually just camped

I would like a mixture of outdoorsy stuff and city. we would like to cover all important monuments in the city leaving a couple of days to see what is a must nearby. I plan to rent a car.
But how is the public transport?

Okay I think you could make a trip to Seattle work. Where are you flying from, MSY? If so, flights are really cheap ($250 roundtrip) for the summer the weekend after the 4th. LINK. About the same for the weekend of the 4th LINK
I only ever drove so I can't comment on this. However I did see buses, street cars, and things like it to easily move around
Space needle is pretty expensive ($35-$45) so there's a few other tall buildings in the city to get up top such as the Sky View Observatory ($25-$35)
Pike Place- Fish market and the first starbucks is right here
Mariners game- If the mariners are home, try and go to a game. Great views of the sound and I've gotten some cheap tickets. Looks like they are home the 4th of july weekend, but not the following weekend
Chihuly gardens- I have only heard of very good things about this museum
Outside of SEA-
Whale watching tour. Would highly recommend if you can find one. Would be good to get out on the water
Boeing museum of flight- Just south of the city, could easily spend half a day there. Would be good on a rainy day if the weather does not cooperate for some reason
I'm sure I'm missing more for the city itself which others can chime in here. I generally tried to stay out of the city and do the more outdoorsy stuff like hiking or waterfall viewing in the cascades. If you make it to the mountains, Stevens Pass has mountain bike rentals during the summer.

I've never been to san diego in all of my travels so I haven't been able to recommend it on here. What would be good for a family to do there?

The only reason I liked July better was because of the nearly 0 chance of wildfires. Mid to late August I had a few summers where it was post apocalyptic outside due to the smoke
That’s a fair point.

Seattle itself is fine for a couple days but if you go that way and don’t go to Olympic NP you are missing out

San Diego has a ton of family things to do. Highly recommend. Zoo, safari, beaches, Coronado. Weather is always perfect.

Look at hotel prices in downtown SEA, and that should make your decision for you on when to go. I don't know if there's an off week during the summer for cruises, but they will slam every hotel in the area. On your flight out (ETA: out of SEA), book the seats on the left side of the plane. You'll get stupendous views on takeoff headed back to TX/LA.
