It'll either be May or late July but wanted to post here to get some ideas on things to do and see aside from the obvious parts. Will be there for five days also currently looking at hotels and was wondering if any of y'all had some hotel recommendations that aren't super expensive

What do you consider obvious? You could probably just sit on a bench and wait for some violence to unfold in front of you, that might be unique. There will probably be some interesting protest or demonstration in Trafalgar square for one cause or another that might provide amusement.

If you go in May, hit a Premier League match somewhere, just make sure you're not wearing the colors of either team, so you can buy a ticket for either the home or away side.

If just 2 people you should be able to find something in the $300 to $400 night range in a decent area. I’d say stick to London sights for the 5 days. Plenty to see there, Tower of London, Kensington Palace, Buckingham (outside only unless you already have scarce tickets), The Eye, The British Museum, Victoria and Albert museum. Outside London trips my first choice would be a day trip to Windsor and the Castle there. Get tickets now. Consider one of the good London Pass options that have many attractions for a number of days included.

It may be too late but try to get tickets to the Ceremony of The Keys at the Tower of London.

Was just in London. I stayed at wembley Hilton. Hotel right next to stadium. Nice area. On jubilee line at wembley Park Station. Rate was like 145. Us dollars a night for 6 nights. When I was checking in they offered breakfast buffet for 14.5 pounds a day. I took it and it was great. Took about 25 minutes to reach green park station.

We were just there and stayed at The Resident Victoria. I don't think it was crazy expensive for London. They have locations in Covent Garden, Kensington, and Soho I believe.

I recommend taking the Thames Clipper Uber Boat for a different view of the city. You can do it as a hop on hop off deal or point to point. We went from Westminster to Greenwich on a beautiful afternoon.

The Devonshire- New pub in SoHo, right off Piccadilly Circus. Very fun happy hour vibe, best Guinness outside of Dublin.
The Ivy Asia by St Pauls- Really cool vibe, Asian fusion and wild cocktails. Madison is a rooftop bar right next door that has a great view.
The Rooftop at Hyde Park- Great place in the park to grab a drink and people watch.
Definitely hit Borough Market in Southwark, The Black Pig has an insane pork sandwich. Huge line but moves quick!
The Market Porter is a great pub across the street.

Taking an uber boat to Greenwich is an easy way to see the city, can get there by tube as well. Cool village vibes, you can get a Lime bike and explore. The Admiral Hardy, Spanish Galleon, and Trafalgar Tavern are cool pubs. If you’re feeling adventurous, the eels and mash at Goddard’s are a great traditional working class dish.

Huge fan of the cask ales (pretty much all the local brass-tap drafts they have at pubs) super drinkable and don’t fill you up while you’re walking around. Best beers ever.

If you’re a group that moves around pretty quickly, 5 days in London may be a lot. I’d highly recommend getting out and seeing the English countryside, or taking the express train to York for a night.

While you’re in London you can book combo bus tours to Stonehenge and a variety of other places like Oxford and Windsor Castle.

London is very large and spread out. There are a lot of very nice areas with nice hotels. We were there last year and stayed in the Mayfair area at a VRBO. I would look in Mayfair and Soho first for hotels then branch out if nothing suits you there. Two things we did that I really enjoyed were to visit the Notting Hill area, the Chelsea area and the Borough Market area around the Tower Bridge. We also went to the theatre district and saw a play. Elton John was playing his shows at the O2 and that is worth going to if anyone is playing there you like.

The Bloomsbury Hotel is near the Tottenham Court tube station, which is the bullseye center of the tube universe and convenient to get you anywhere. The rooms have UK and US style electrical outlets, and the rooms are modern and decent size for London.

British Museum and several theaters are right beside you. Go see a play, even if you think you aren't into that. They are a great experience, and air conditioned, which is nice in summer.

On day one, get on one of those hop on/off tour buses and stay on it. Make the whole loop to get the lay of the land and see all the major sights (at least from outside). If you try to do it on your own, you'll run yourself ragged and won't come close to covering as much ground. It's great for a first-time visitor to get started.

Pick some things that you see along the way (Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, etc.) and go back to them for inside tours.

My favorite pub is Wenlock Arms (1835), which serves real cask ale, with rotating beers. It's out in a neighborhood, and you may be the only tourists there. Totally different vibe from pubs in the tourist areas. Bus or tube will get you near it.

Brick Lane is worth a visit of you enjoy Indian and Bangladeshi food. Find a good restaurant--there are dozens--and go have a meal and look around the shops.

Get the Citymapper app. Google Maps can work well too. Use them to navigate not just the Tube but also the buses. We might tube to a distant pub, then ride the bus back to see some different sites, often going through residential areas and mixing with locals. It takes longer, but it can be a cool experience.

IF you want a cheap but decent place, The Dolphin hotel near Paddington is my go-to for a quick cheap trip to the city. I've stayed there with my wife (no pics) and she was okay with it. It is not glamorous but functional and clean.

We have stayed at the Hilton Hyde Park. It is right next door to the Queensway tube station. For time to chill it is across the street from Kensington Park. The park has food vendors and benches where you can literally do nothing. Walk thru the park and you are at Royal Albert Hall.

I second the Resident hotel. Stayed in the one in Soho several times.

On a flight back from London now. A poster recommended Hilton Hyde Park. It was a good hotel outside of our first room. The water system had an issue where they moved us. Right next to two different Tubes. Bayswater and Queensway. Would recommend. Soho would be the area I would stay next time.

Lodging - Nell Qwynn House in Chelsea near 2 tube stations. It's a condo operation with hotel-like short-term unit... cozy but nice... much to do within walking distance. LINK /
They can arrange to/from airport transportation at a better price.

In addition to other museums, relax in Victoria & Albert, a large eclectic collection. In central London see the Churchill War Room.

I'm another fan of Uber Boat, you can get an app that gives a narrative about things you pass along the shore. The Maritime Museum is a great river destination.

Spend some time studying tubes and buses. They and Uber Boat all take chipped credit cards... no complex pass system. The underground may be your best transportation option. Traffic can be terrible.

Restaurants are expensive, but there are lots of fast-food options to save you money.
