Long rant, sorry in advance.

Had an extended weekend trip planned for this weekend to visit the Dakotas: Theodore Roosevelt Nat'l Park (North Dakota); Mt. Rushmore, Badlands Nat'l Park, Deadwood, Sturgis, Wind Cave Nat'l Park (South Dakota). Friday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon.

Got a notice yesterday afternoon 3 hrs before departure that due to 'mechanical issues' with the plane, the 1st flight from New Orleans to Denver was CANCELLED. They rescheduled us for the same time the next day (today). Okay, that's 24 hrs less of vacation time, but whatever. We'll make due, take a few things out.

Get to the airport today, all is well until boarding time, and the flight is DELAYED. 15 mins, half hour, hour, then finally they say delayed until 10 PM (6 hrs after original boarding time).Connecting flight to Dickinson, ND was also cancelled, so United is going to get us to Denver, put us up in a hotel with 2 meal vouchers, and we take connecting flight the next (Sunday) morning to Dickinson.

Okay, we can roll with it. Go home , get some dinner, hang out, then just as we are leaving to go back to the airport, another notice. Delayed until 12:15 AM.

15 minute later, another notice. Delayed until 8 AM tomorrow (Sunday) morning.

If it happens, we still can catch connecting flight to Dickinson ND and hopefully salvage some of the planned trip Sunday aftenoon, Monday and Tuesday.

But get this. They told us in a text message what the "mechanical issue" was with the plane that is preventing our flight. Engine? No. A/C? No.

It is a problem with the FLIGHT ATTENDANT'S JUMP SEAT. And from something told us by the gate agent, they have to fly a part in from Houston to fix it.

Seriously.

Thankfully, the hotel for last night and tonight allowed cancellation with no charge. And the rental car is only going to charge us for time used.

But for the second night in a row, I will be sleeping at home instead of on vacation, which (hopefully) will begin TWO calendar days after it was supposed to start.

TL, DR-- UNITED SUCKS

All airlines suck, it's not just United. The industry has fallen just like the fast food industry

United more than most seems to treat you well enough if you have status and like absolute trash if you don’t.

They are all going downhill

We just flew Southwest to Orlando and it was a shitshow. Planes were worn down on the inside and they don’t even have plugs or usb.

Customer service had 15 deep at all times and they told me to call 800 which was a 3 hour wait.

They can’t possibly be worse than American.

I flew Spirit yesterday. Both flights were on time, the gate agent and flight attendants were all very friendly, sat in the emergency exit row and had at least 7-8 extra inches of leg room, so I was able to stretch out (I'm 6'3).

This was my 7th time to fly Spirit. Have had no issues. My only complaint is the relatively hard seats. From SLC to NO with one plane change - total cost with 1 carry-on: $175

Maybe I've just been lucky with Spirit.

I fly United weekly and my issues, at worst, are minimum.

I’m status with AA and fly out of DFW which is the hub, and it’s never an issue.

I have status with American too. My American flight last week that connected at DFW to my final destination was awful. It was all about equipment or crew issues. We were delayed overnight outbound causing us to spend a night near the CLT airport instead of the Caribbean. We were delayed 3 hours coming home.

What I would've recommended is at least getting out of MSY on Friday to a hub. If they delayed your flight around noon, that gave you a good half day to try and find alternative options. Leaving from Lafayette, baton rouge and going through Houston, flying up to Chicago or Newark and overnighting there before the Dakota's.

This is a great example of you needing to find alternatives versus just waiting on the airline to give you an option. You've lost 2 days of vacation from this. What you can also do is see if united will change your return flight back by 2 days given this mess. Call them or ask a customer service agent in Denver when you get there

ETA: I probably would have given up by this point and taken the refund/reschedules for later in the summer

nobody is going to tell you your experience was acceptable but I fly United almost exclusively and it is by far the best airline for the places I go (Denver most often). The 8am direct flight from MSY has never let me down and the A320 they fly is a comfortable plane

And people question why I drive for my vacations.

Yeah, got stuck in Dallas for two days and they offered me a room at some fleabag hotel after I stood in line forever.

All the airlines are pretty bad.

I try to never fly a connecting flight but not always possible. I also always leave out of Houston because they have a lot of options if something happens or I miss a flight.

I've never had anything but pleasant experiences with United. In contrast, I've never had anything but awful experiences with American. Delta is still probably the best domestically but UA is definitely catching up to them

Yeah if I lose two days on a vacation, I would just ask for my money back and drive to the Gulf Coast for a couple of days.
