United upgrade waitlist

I upgraded seating for a flight i have on United and it says waitlisted.
For people that have done this, when do they let you know if you have been upgraded or not.
Online it says can be up to 1 hour before flight or could be sooner.
If you've done this, how long did it take for a response.
Flight is in July if that matters.

You paid for an upgrade and it has you waitlisted?

It basically runs until check in is closed, as it’s based on tiers of priority. Just because you requested the upgrade earliest doesn’t mean someone who has higher priority than you who requested the upgrade later won’t get the upgrade above you; they absolutely will. You just look up at the screen at your gate with the upgrade priority list and look for your name. It will show you as cleared or not cleared. It will also generally tell you once upgrades have all been doled out.
For anyone curious, if you get waitlisted and your upgrade doesn’t clear, the points/cash get refunded back to you. And the cost to get waitlisted is far less than buying the upgrade outright.

That’s interesting. I never fly united so I didn’t realize they did that.

How did you upgrade? With plus points?
United has gotten ridiculous with the amount of people paying for upgrades. Its near impossible to use plus points. Think I forefeit 150 come Feb 1

As an example, this year my wife and I flew to Greece. To upgrade from economy to premium plus would have cost about $1,000 per person per flight. The cost to request waitlist status was 20k points each. The requests ultimately didn’t clear, so it’s not a cheat code by any means, but especially if you have points lying around, it’s a good little shot at an upgrade if you otherwise wouldn’t be willing to buy it outright.

Yup - think I forfeited 80 or 100 at the end of last year

united offers any available first class seats for cash. Anyone willing to shell out 200 extra bucks at check in gets priority. I have not gotten a free upgrade in several years and I am platinum status.

There’s a couple United routes I fly frequently and I find that if I am booking close to to last minute the front of the plane fills up before the back of the plane. The demand for first class seating exceeds the supply.

Im 1k and Id say I naturally got 5-8 regular upgrades (no plus points) last year and then 10 using plus points. Again, forfeiting nearly 200 of my 340 plus points for the year because I couldn't use them due to first being sold out. I don't use plus points for short, less than 90 min flights.
So out of 60 flights, 25% were upgraded some way or another.

My status is with American so I’m not sure how United works. I have found out on more than one occasion that I had been upgraded when I was boarding the flight.

Depends on a number of things... Theres an algorythym.
If x number of 1st class is open by x date, the system triggers upgrades. I've been upgraded as far as 6 days out.
If there are only 1-2 1st available, final upgrades happen 5 min before boarding.

United upgrades are frustrating and few and far between. I’ve switched allegiance to American and have been upgraded 4 of my last 6 flights and usually 24 hours or more before the flight.

My upgrade experience with American has been very good.

I just booked a United flight for next Tuesday... 4/10 first class are open and I submitted plus points for the upgrade.
I'll know Sunday once the upgrade order is posted what my chances are of getting upgraded.

I give up 100 plus points on that date.
