Upcoming Honeymoon in Vietnam

My soon-to-be wife and I are going to Vietnam for our honeymoon in mid-January.
Apparently Vietnam is a popular spot for Europeans and Australians/New Zealanders to vacation at. Beautiful scenery, relatively safe, and very affordable once in country.
So far, our trip looks like this:
On 1/16, we'll land in Ho Chi Minh City late in the evening. The next morning we'll fly to Phu Quoc Island where we'll stay a beach resort until 1/21 when we fly to Da Nang. After we spend a couple of days in Da Nang, our schedule is wide open. I'm hoping to iron out the rest of our schedule between now and the time we fly out on 1/31.
We're looking to rent a motorbike for a day and we'd like to hike some while there.
Have any of you been to Vietnam? Would love to hear some of your favorite places to visit and experiences that you've had. I plan on updating the post with some of the things we did after we get back and settled in to the married-life.

Get a language app and hit it hard.
Vietnamese is (structurally) a very easy language. No verb conjugation and only four tenses. Hardest part is the complicated pronoun system and you can just say "ban" for "you". Otherwise you just need vocabulary and that's easier since you know what words you're likely to need. So you can remember those and not have to be an expert.

I think Ho Chi Minh City is worth another day at least, maybe at the end of your trip. Hanoi is worth a day or two as well.

Went to Vietnam in September and did the following. Would recommend.
-Landed in Ho Chi Minh. Spent 3 nights there and think that was the perfect amount of time, especially with the first day getting in town later in the day. Stayed at the Reverie Saigon. Would highly recommend. Also paid for car service which included Vietnam entry via the diplomatic line. I don’t know how much it cost but would definitely do it again. Had 2 airport officials waiting at the bridge when we arrived. Got our luggage off the carousel, entered the diplomat line where we were the only 2 people and were through customs in about 5 minutes.
-Did a night moped food tour the day we anrrived and it was a really cool experience. Guided by 2 university students.
-Visited the independence palace, war remnants museum, and Saigon Central post office. Also saw the CIA building.
-Flew to DaNang and took a car to Banyan Tree Lang co for a beach stay for 3 nights. Place was awesome and the beach was very nice
-Stayed a night in Hoi An before flying out. Took a guided tour with an old interpreter for the Army. The lanterns on the river were a sight to see. Stayed at the La Siesta Hoi A resort and was very nice as well. Had a spa on site.
-flew to Hanoi and took a van to Ha Long Bay. Booked a 1 night boat tour with Indochina Junk. Single cabin boat. Was just us and the crew. All the food was good and the sites were great.
-Stayed 2 nights in Hanoi at Meritel Hanoi. Nice hotel and cheap. Did a motorbike food tour and went all over town and ate a bunch of random street food.
All said, great trip. Would definitely recommend. If you have any questions shoot. I left out a lot of details.

We'll set aside at least two days and one night for Ho Chi Minh, maybe squeeze in three days. A moped food tour sounds awesome.
We did a walking food tour in Tokyo one time and that was by far my favorite experience - people from all nationalities laughing and drinking with each other (plus our guide reminded me of Mr. Chow from the Hangover and he carried plum sake in his man purse). If I can find the name of his business, I'll post it - can't recommend it enough.
From your trip, it sounds like you did several types of tours. I really want to do a boat tour overnight, so I'll look into Indochina Junk.
How was your experience in terms of transportation? I'm so used to renting a car when I travel in the States or catching an Uber in the city, but I imagine we'll hire vans to get us to and from.
Also, how was the language barrier? Are there any words or phrases you'd recommend knowing before arriving?

You certainly need a few days in Saigon …. Much more interesting than Danang
Hanoi is a must as is Hoi A for a first time visitor. Da Lat, Sappa and Hue are deeper cuts.
Language is not a barrier at most hotels or restaurants

We used Street Food Man in Ho Chi Minh and booked Hanoi Food Tour on classic motorbike via Viator in Hanoi
-Language wasn’t an issue especially in the city and with the younger generation.
-I arranged most of my transportation through the hotel and that was easiest for us. Everything is so cheap. You can get a ride in a new Mercedes for cheap. Food and beer is dirt cheap
I typically don’t do guided tours on any of my international trips but I would 100% do it in Vietnam. Hanoi is absolute madness and Ho Chi Minh isn’t far behind it.

Several people have mentioned moped tours. We didn’t do that but there are thousands of them all over every city. It was common to see one moped loaded down with a father, mother and 2 kids weaving in and out of traffic. Vietnam is great for just watching people. It’s a different world for sure

Don’t waste too much time trying to learn Vietnamese … what you will retain will only slow you down and annoy locals, who want to practice their English anyway.

I second this.
We did a private Mekong Delta Tour that was really good when we were there that was based out of Hanoi Vietnam Travel Group
Also did a junk boat trip in Halong Bay, which ended up being better than I expected

If you're doing to Da Nang you'll surely want to go to Hoi An. My wife and I rented a cottage out at An Bang beach and loved it.
We did a motorcycle from Hue to Da Nang through Hai Van Pass and it's one of my favorite things I've done in all my travels

Did a car instead of a motorbike but can confirm Hai Van Pass is very cool. The views at the top are awesome.

Yeah, after reading more about Da Nang versus Hoi An, we've decided to stay in Hoi An rather than Da Nang.
Booked 3 days in Hoi An at a highly-rated hotel for only $132 total - crazy how inexpensive these hotels are. I've read where you can rent bikes (sometimes free) at the hotels, so I imagine that will be how we get around Hoi An.
Some things we're planning on doing in Hoi An:
- visit old town
- food tour
- suit/dress shop (their shops are custom-made, affordable, and can have it ready within a day)
- see the lanterns on the river
- visit An Bang Beach
- kayak to some caves
- take a cooking class
Not sure if we'll have time to do the Hai Van Pass but will keep that in mind for our next trip.

Hanoi is our last stretch that we haven't booked anything for yet. Halong Bay looks awesome and it sounds like the junk boat tours are good. We're looking at visiting La Han Bay which is near that area. From the sound of it, there are less tourists and the views are great like Halong Bay.

If you need a suit in Hoi An - there is a BR native there that works with a few local shops. He trained under Manuel Martinez and can help guide you for a good price

That sounds like a good alternative. We'd heard some not great things from friends about their experiences in Halong Bay and decided to skip it and go to Sapa and that was amazing.

Well done on your itinerary.
Sounds like one of mine.
Mrs Füt (no pics) is now genuinely interested in history & architecture.
