When do you all think it will be ok to travel there again? Not trying to be insensitive, just wondering if travel to Kanapalli will be good to go by year end or if the hotels may still be housing people that are dealing with the effects of the fire.

I would say at least 6 months, possibly even longer.
I've stayed on Kanapalli and there is plenty of rooms so eventually some will come back online, but it's gonna be a slow process and as long as FEMA is paying the hotels they can survive without the tourists. I would probably choose another island if you are looking for a Hawaii trip.
Lahaina will probably never be the same and those people that lost homes are probably moving on for good.
I would expect most to sell their land as developers are going to be chomping at the bit to get that land. Most of these people not only lost homes but their livelihoods as well so they may have to find work elsewhere to get back on their feet.

I’d pick another island now.

Go to Kauai. It is horrible what has happened there. We were there in March

If you are from SW Louisiana, you should know it has been almost 3 years since hurricane Laura did similar damage to this area. Calcasieu parish is only about 80-85 % recovered.

How many contractors will be willing to go there to help rebuild? How will the supply of labor and building materials be?

It will be at least 2 years for them to start to recover.

Yeah I've been trying to figure this out myself. We booked a house and flights a few months ago for a trip right after Christmas.

Figured I wasn’t the only one. Have reservations for Mardi Gras week and trying to make a decision on how to proceed. Interested to see what you end up doing.

I'm sure housing of all kinds - including hotels and AirBnBs - will be at even more of a premium than ever before. I would assume the time it takes to re-build a home is substantially longer in Hawaii than in the Continental US.

If I lived in Hawaii, I'd imagine the extra traffic, wait times, congestion, and annoyance from tourists is the last thing they want to deal with for at least the 18+ months while they re-build their lives. Just cancel the trip.

I’ll play devil’s advocate, and recommend going if you are up to it and nothing from the state of Hawaii recommends against it.

Hawaii is based on tourism and they are going to want the money. Many of the ignorant locals hate tourists no matter what, so sure some of them would never want you there.

But the absolute hardest part about rebuilding for locals is rebuilding the economy. Sure they will have some government assistance for a bit, but that doesn’t last forever and it’s rarely enough. The people that own restaurants, tourist businesses like fishing guides, dive shops, etc. all need someone to pay them also.

We are supposed to stay at a resort that did not have fire damage but is near the affected area. Its web site says they are closed right now and will have an update in September. We are supposed to go in late October. I am telling the wife we need to cut bait now.

I'd call them. Again, there was plenty of areas of Maui not affected here. Relatively speaking it was a small portion. So if no one visits the entire island will be affected.

I may be an idiot and they not want you. But generally speaking they are going to want to work to get back to life in 2 months.

Maui county mayor and the governor are begging people to visit Maui. Don't go to Lahaina obviously but they need the money. Unemployment is shooting up.

If our hotel opens back up we are going to go to Maui in late October. We are supposed to hear in about 3 weeks. If not, we made back up plans on another island that we can cancel. I still have some concerns about what we'll be able to do. For example, the snorkeling company we had booked is still operating but has moved to the other side of Lahaina from our hotel, which will take us 2 hours to get there assuming the direct route through Lahaina is still closed.

Have you looked into South Maui (Wailea, Kihei)? Places unaffected need the business right now.

Been here for a couple of days and glad we kept our plans. Plane out of LAX was only about 1/2 full although there seems to be a good amount of people here. All of the businesses outside of Lahaina seem to be back up and running as normal.

Staying at the Ritz Kapalua in late March and plan to spend most of my time at the resort and in Wailea, did you take the Road to Hana? Was it affected by the fires? Did the fires change your plans at all? TIA!

Doing the road to Hana tomorrow. No affect on that so you should be fine. We probably would have gone to Front Street one day walking around so that is the only thing the fire changed for us.
