When do you feel it is worth it to pay for an upgrade on a flight?

Currently booked on economy for a 14 hour flight overseas in a few weeks. I see that I can now upgrade to Comfort+ (delta) for $300/person for just the one leg.
The seats are the same, but there's a tiny bit of extra leg room. The big difference would be that we wouldn't have a random 3rd person on our row since it'd be a 2 seat row instead of 3.
That upgrade for just the 1 leg would be 27% of the original ticket price. You think that is worth it?

Personally, I'm cheap and not an OT baller and I'm willing to sacrifice a little comfort for the money. I feel like I could use the $300 per person more effectively at my destination vs. for the small amount of legroom it affords me. If I were tall, had plenty of money, or if it were more of an upgrade (first class instead of comfort+) then maybe so.

We pay for the early boarding on SWA on the return flight because we are not always able to check in at the 24 hour mark.

I splurge in many areas of my life, but I just can't ever bring myself to pay for upgrades in flights. And I'm on the tall side (6'2" and long legged). But I just won't do it. I'd pay extra for a flight that would magically get me to my destination sooner, but if I'm going to be in the air for the same amount of time then I just pay for economy and muscle through it. I figure the money I save can go towards a great dinner or a night out on the town which I value far more than a slightly more comfortable seat and few extra inches of leg room.
That said, I've gotten upgraded to first class a few times over the years and it sure is nice up there

If it was just the wife and I we would probably opt for two isle seats in a 3-4-3 configuration for a flight that long rather than spending the money on +. More legroom doesnt do much for us since neither of us are tall, have an desire to board the plane earlier, bring most of our own snacks anyway and with no checked baggage benefit anymore we don't see much benefit at that cost.

That is exactly what I was logging on to do this morning and then noticed the upgrade. Unfortunately, there's no side by side aisle seats available anymore, shame on me for being dumb when doing the initial booking.

I would say it depends on if you have any medication to knock you out on the flight. If not, $300 seems worth it if the flight is looking full and no shot of getting an empty middle seat between.
We have been playing the points game that last 5 years and book first or business class on the way to any destination over 8 hours. It is absolutely worth the effort and turns that day of travel into part of the vacation.

This. We're doing Italy in June and our JFK to Milan flight will be in Emirates business class. All on miles.
ETA: To answer the OP it's certainily I'd consider as I'm 6'2" and I suffer from jet lag. Coming home the upgrade wouldn't be as important to me as on the flight to my destination.

I'm 6'5" & I've never paid for it on a North America flight. Occasionally get a free first class upgrade though & it's nice most of the time.
I haven't flown overseas, but I probably would pay for it on a long flight.

That sucks.
Normally, I will fly economy or SW if I am paying cash and if I am using points I will normally fly either both or at least a return leg business or first.
Economy heading out isn't that bad. Adrenaline is high, pre and mid flight drinks are flowing but coming back I want more comfort.

14 hours, I'd probably do it. Not because I really care, but because the woman will "appreciate" it.
But look at more than just seat pitch and width. I booked premium economy on a Singapore A350, which was fine. Until I realized that the armrests in my empty row couldn't be moved, but everyone in the back of the plane could stretch out across the entire row.

I almost always fly with miles, and I almost always try to fly in biz on flights over five hours. I just flew to Ethiopia, and the return flight has to stop for fuel (because ADD is at altitude), so that ended up being 19.5 hours in that plane, and I was very tired of being in a plane, even in business class.
But I have done it in economy. I did IAH-SYD, which is 17 hours, and that was actually fine, but I was in a row with my daughter and niece (small people), so I wasn't too cramped. I would be afraid of booking a long flight in economy as a solo traveler, as it would be extremely hard if I were in a row with obese people.

When work doesn't give you a choice (16h55m from LAX to MEL, among many, many others)... Honestly, I've never had a problem on international flights, but domestic is another story.

Rarely.
I have flown first class a bunch of times but I have never paid for it. I am comfortable enough in coach. I would rather spend the money on entertainment during the trip.

Not all seats are the same. Use a site like seatguru to make sure there are no surprises. Even comfort+ seats can come with surprises.

It is worth it if the leg you would be upgrading is the long overseas flight. A few inches more legroom and no third passenger next to either of you will become big deals as that 14 hour flight wears on. However if you and wife are the types of people who fall asleep easily for long periods of time no matter where you are then maybe save the $300. I'm not that type and you will need to sleep or jet lag will be brutal on you at your destination.

anything over like four hours I'm upgrading to premium economy at a minimum.
we fly to London a few times a year since my daughter lives there and both BA and United have a nice option to get you out of coach. It costs, but its money well spent for me. I'm 6'4" and it's mostly legs. I don't fit in any coach seat

At $100 per hour for 1st class, I go with it. Any flight over 1 hour I upgrade to plus class if I don't do 1st.

IMO, the older and more affluent you get, the more you should spend on stuff like this. You can't take it with you and the health of your mind and body are basically all that matters. I say upgrade this and all future flights!
