Which CA beach town to visit?

We're going to San Diego and wanted to use one day to visit one of the beach towns north of the city, but still south of Los Angeles. It looks like the Pacific Liner stops at Oceanside, Solana Beach, and San Clemente. Which of these towns would best best to visit for a day? Does one of these towns have nicer beaches than others? Which one has the nicest downtown?

Never been to those, but Laguna Beach is very nice.

If you’re looking for “nicer” and “safer” that the others your best bet is Laguna Beach or Huntington Beach, but there are lots of other options closer to San Diego
We have two teenage boys and we did Mission Beach and Pacific Beach in one day, it was an awesome vibe for them

Either San Clemente or Solana Beach

Go there often for work. Always stay at the Hilton at Huntington.
Huntington is my fav because it has a small town feel and plenty to do. Laguna is awesome but it’s more touristy

If you're based in San Diego there are so many closer options that I wouldn't even consider going further north of Oceanside

Any coastal town on the PCH from La Jolla to Oceanside will do.

Yeah we are just looking for a laid back beach town with some scenery to it that is walkable. Safe would be nice.

Anything between SD & Oceanside. I stayed in Oceanside for work last summer. It was an awesome time.

Love San Clemente (it has a cool surfer town vibe) but you cannot go wrong with Del Mar/Solana Beach. The Brigantine overlooking the racetrack has some of the best fish tacos anywhere and there is some shopping, cool beach bars and breakfast places in both towns if that's your thing. Huge fan of Poseiden in Del Mar.

We stayed in La Jolla last time and spent one day cruising the coast and ended up having dinner at the Chart House in Oceanside. The food was great but what made it special was one of the best sunsets I ever saw. That part of the coast, south of Carlsbad, is so nice for a day trip from SD.

Yep, San Clemente up to San Juan Capistrano are cool little beach towns that don't feel as "plastic" as Dana Point, Laguna Beach or Newport Beach.
We hit Del Mar and Solana after spending several trips in La Jolla and just found them more enjoyable.
Someone mentioned Huntington Beach...no. Unless you like a nuclear power plant as part of your beach views.
OP, stop at Bear Flag Fish Co while you're there!

Oh hell yes. I always hit up the one at Crystal Cove in Newport Coast but there is also a location in Newport Beach.

Newport Beach. Can go down to the wedge to check out the surfers. Ride around the harbor in a Duffy, visit balboa island. Etc.

Definitely do LaJolla
Also, head over to the Coronado Hotel and you can access the beach without staying at the hotel

Had a seminar in San Diego in January and stopped in Oceanside on the way to LA to visit family. It is a very laid back beach town and if you go on a Thursday as we did , there is a nice open air market that evening. Takes up a few blocks.

I spent a lot of time in Manhattan Beach and loved it. Shops, bars, restaurants, great beach...

Can confirm. And it's only 3.8 miles from LAX. Manhattan Beach is a gem.
