Texas \ Oklahoma folks what is there to know about living / Retiring in Wichita Falls?

Admittedly I’ve never hung out there for any length of time and only rode through on motorcycle trips and such.

Seems like a nice place to retire to or move to within a few years of retirement.

TIA.

My first thought when I read your post was “hell no!”, but I’m not retirement age .

I asked my dad who is (he’s lived in the Wichita Falls/Lawton, OK area for essentially his entire life minus 20 years). In his opinion, it would not be a bad choice. It has just about all you need, except for entertainment. OKC and DFW are only a couple of hours away for more of what you don't get in town.

Where would you be relocating from? Are there any other areas you’re considering?

Good luck

I lived there for two months over a summer And was there another time in February for two weeks. Summers are brutally muggy and the mosquitoes are like bats. Seems worse on that front than Alabama/Louisiana/Mississippi to me. February seemed mild overall.

It isn’t for younger folks who are from somewhere else, but I can see it suiting the lifestyle of a retired person.

It’s pretty low crime and good on things like that (definitely has the actual positive aspects of the “Texas” vibe unlike bigger cities in the state). Satisfies all the bases of a serviceable city.

Most people I knew who lived there lived somewhere nearby called Burkburnett.

Not a bad place to retire. They have quite a few military guys retire around there because of its easy access to Sheppard AFB, Ft Sill and VA.

I'd probably go to Burkburnett or Iowa Park.

Nice, if you like dry, flat, brown, and windy. Also, all the temperature extremes. I lived for 3 years in Amarillo in almost the same climate. No thank you!

Baton Rouge so I’m sure most anywhere will be an upgrade in most respects.

I’ve lived in large cities, beach cities, winters of Minneapolis, obviously south LA summers. The close proximity to VA is appealing as I’m a veteran (not retired but I could uses the benefits)

I’m definitely looking to FLA or TX for a lot of the same reasons. Seems like North TX area would be more afforded largely because the lack of amenities that FLA or the big cities of TX offer.

Is there any industrial business in the area (engineering)? Seems most of the work I’ve see is medical & inside/outside sales. Cost of living being less in WF I’m sure I could stand to make less I do in BR.

There’s not much in the way of engineering in that area (you may want to take a look at civil servant positions at Sheppard Air Force base).

My parents retired about 50 miles north of Wichita Falls. The open roads and space were appealing to them after being in DFW for 20 years. Between disc golf, general exploring (my dad reads a lot of history), and road trips, they are rarely bored.

Weather in the area has been mentioned a couple of times. When it’s hot… it’s miserably hot. The wind, especially in the winter, is… something else.

My family is from there so I'm a bit biased but I've been there probably 20 times in my life. From childhood to adulthood and I love it. Burkburnett is a little trashy, I have family with drug problems and I'm sure lack of entertainment had something to do with that.

Someone mentioned extreme temperatures, and they're not wrong. I went during new years and the temperature was in the teens. I went for a wedding in July and the temperature was 105. It's a dry heat and not as taxing as our humid heat.

They have their bad areas and good areas.

Entertainment wise, there's a couple of nice breweries downtown and DFW isn't but an hour and a half away if you need more.

I'd move there given the opportunity. Baton Rouge is a dump comparatively.

Thanks for all the good information.

One thing that concerned me somewhat was tornados on that area but upon looking at the NOAH tornado history site it doesn't appear that that area is quite in "tornado alley" 4 over the last 30 years isn't really something to stress about.

Have not lived there, but been through there several times.

I could live there if I needed for work, but retirement would be a no go probably.

If you are wanting this general area, it seems OKC would be a better option or the far outskirts of DFw.

West Texas is a very desolate place and WF is on the doorstep of that desolation.

I didn't know anyone would like WF but reading this thread, I guess there are. I've spent a few overnights there for work and ridden the Hotter than Hell bike race there a few times and I wouldn't wish living in that hell hole on anyone.

I've found some good bourbon at the Specs there when passing through.
And I thought the rib crib was good when I ate there. That's all I've got.
