I think people will be surprised by what Kelly gets out of the returning staff. It's obvious he is higher on what he has to work with than the fans.

Dunn seemed to ask pitchers to try and do things they just couldn't do consistently.

If the staff can keep the walks to a minimum like they did in the fall they should be solid.

Besides pitching, I think the third outfielder will be the most contested spot this spring. Drost, Pearson, Stevenson, Jobert, Gio and Leto could all battle there.

As I mentioned in another thread:

We have 12-14 to put in 9 spots. The opening weekend will be about who's healthy, but we'll probably see alot of guys.

I expect Devin to start opening game of the season. After that, it's anybody's guess. I truly believe the starting roles will be a revolving door, and not because of poor performance but rather just erratic/situational usage. For example, Reyz may be looked at as a back end guy, but you may see him start a Sunday if he hasn't been used yet - or, Coleman may be a projected Saturday or Sunday guy but we won't hesitate to bring him in on a Friday and insert someone else. All those moving parts then make a difference for the next weekend. I think this will make it really hard for teams to have sound offensive game plans and for us to keep arms as fresh as possible.

Having more than 3 guys with quality starting experience will be huge in Omaha.

Post season, in general. You never know what kind of jam you may get in. But, on that note, most of the CWS teams had a guy that they could shorten games with...multiple games in a row if necessary. NC State had Justice, Miss St had Sims, etc. Kopps is another example. We need that kind of guy. We have a few candidates, for sure. And, they had a bridge to get to them usually (if they needed it). I think that's going to be crucial - finding 2-3 guys that you can pretty much count on to bury teams when it gets dicey behind the starter to let the bats catch up.

I’m interested to see how Berry’s glove looks at 3rd. I’d also like to see Jobert win either the DH or 3rd outfield spot. He looked more athletic than I anticipated in the video lsu released a few weeks ago.
Does anyone know if Shaffer from SELU has been working out with the team yet? What are y’all expecting from him this year?

Berry's defense will take a little while. I know he had worked really hard on it in the off season before being injured and still wasn't quite there yet. He's athletic (can be stiff, but still athletic), and not a complete liability but he's just not quite there with the glove and throws. We'll see if he did anything between fall and now, then between now and the season. As with McManus vs Milazzo, it will be interesting to see how Johnson handles Berry from a defensive standpoint. Personally, I think we see alot of shuffling. Almost every option is pretty damn good so Johnson will just have to find the right fit.

ETA: It's easy to forget that Berry was just a freshman last year. Even super freshmen take a minute in certain areas. I believe Johnson's goal for Berry defensively is just to get him better, even if that just means coaching him up at practice, throwing him at 3B occasionally, but moreso just getting his bat in the lineup.

Ha yeah kopps was the guy I was thinking of. I don't mean to say any one of our players can do exactly what he did, because he did seem to be pretty unique, but perhaps it did show in college you can have a really good arm but not pigeonhole him into a specific role. I get the logic behind grooming players for specific roles but sometimes, and this season from the outside looks to be a candidate, you just need to have some good arms that you throw when you have to in order to keep the opposition bat's down as well as you can through 9.

From my observations during fall ball, Berry's feet, rather than his glove need the most improvement defensively. If I were his coach, I would have him take lots of ground balls with transfer and throws until it became second nature. His bat doesn't need much practice, IMO.

Yes, Berry just needs to be drilled and drilled and drilled. Game reps aren't going to solve his woes on defense. He's a good baseball player but has sloppy mechanics on defense. Again, not all that out of the ordinary for a young kid (and, yes, he was just a freshman becoming a soph). Thompson is another example. Considered very above average defensively but certainly had his wtf moments last year. These kids come in with bad habits that take time to correct, on top of being young. I really hope Berry had homework in his time off. Makes you wonder if they shut him down partially bc of nagging aches and pains but also to let him drill behind closed doors.

They are but Dugas, Crews and Jobert are your best outfielders I think… injuries happen as well so it really is nice to have a lot of talent for depth purposes

I'm still dying on the hill that Stevenson takes over in the 3rd outfield spot. Which would be him in CF and Crews staying in right. Merrifield is definitely going to be a big part at 3rd base which has been stated a lot. Berry will be huge at DH, it's going to be interesting how 3rd base plays out through the season. As well as the outfield.

Stevenson is a well rounded player. He is good defensively, could play CF and allow Crews to play his natural position of RF like you mentioned. He can also hit, not a power bat but can clear the wall on occasion.

The competition is heavy though. Gio is the best defender, most experienced and has hit for average in his career. There are those that say Pearson is special and he has the power bat. Drost has raw power and has flashed, not to mention a year under his belt. Jobert just hits wherever he plays. We don't know about Leto yet. He was injured in the Fall, but I can tell you that he has decent speed. Adam and Project who I both respect a lot, seem to think Leto is a year away.

How do y’all feel about our pitching? I think our offense is going to be something to behold but pitching worries me.

I think Fontenot Hilliard and Coleman bring in significant experience in the SEC which is going to help a lot. We also have transfers Reyzelman and Riley Cooper who are going to be significant bullpen pieces for us and maybe even form out a starting role if they can. Then you bring back majority of everyone last year besides Hill, Marceaux, Labas. I think our bullpen pitching is going to be great since we have tremendous arms and now they have experience. I also think Jason Kelly is going to be a better coach than Alan Dunn. It’s going to be excited to see, but if there’s a question mark on this team it’s definitely pitching

All these questions means thee is an abundance of talent that the coaches have to work with. I am confident that these coaches will figure it out and this will be a contender of a team.

One potential move I have yet to see put out there is moving Dugas to DH. There seem to be a number of really good OF on this team. I am sure that weekday games will show a number of moves. This may very well be one of them.

Thoughts?
