Yep. He was capable of being very likable and was an excellent actor, which made him perfect for a number of the roles he got. PTAA and Uncle Buck are perfect examples. He was absolutely perfect for those characters.

I have zero doubt he would have successfully transitioned to fully dramatic roles, he had the acting chops

He was well on his way to an Oscar. I have no doubt.

I believe this as well. He would’ve eventually won an Academy Award for something. Hell, just look at his brief cameo in JFK.

I’m a fan of Home For the Holidays with Holly Hunter and Robert DowneyJr. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself the favor.

They say comedy actors transition to drama easier than drama actors transition to comedy.

If we're being honest, he wasn't really. Like Robin Williams. Both could be extremely likeable though.

The frick?

I saw Williams do his stand up live and I laughed so hard that my chest was sore the next day.

I wish I had alt accounts just to downvote you more.

I thought Robin Williams was 10 shades of brilliant, even when the writing/direction let him down.

When it came to John Candy, he was probably the least objectionable of his rotund brethren, but I rarely find fat comics funny.

Thats not to say that fat guys can't BE funny, but it's incidental if they just so happen to be. It's when 99% of their material is about being fat that they lose me. It's lazy and derivative.

As to the movie...the thing that struck me was the over-the-top 80s score. It was distracting and really dates this movie. A lot of 80s movies are afflicted by this. I don't quite feel this way about any other decade.

Damn you. Watched it thanksgiving night and the damn music kept bothering me. I haven’t been able to watch Beverly Hills cop for years for the same reason

I'll get shelled for this, but I never found John Candy funny.

Have you seen Uncle Buck? One of the all time best comedies and he’s fantastic in it.

Saw it in the theater and didn’t find it that funny. Good for some chuckles but nothing gut busting. Same with Great Outdoors.

I’ve always liked Summer Rental as my favorite John Candy solo film.
Planes, Trains & Automobiles follows the goofball fat guy n straight guy formula.

Either way I really like both movies.

Robin Williams is kind of like Jim Carey to me. Mostly over the top comedy. I enjoy both of them in serious rolls over their comedy.
