Any recs? Just moved to NW Arkansas and looking to get back into it. I’ve read the 9’ 5 wt is the best all around setup. These rods are expensive AF now compared to when I used to fish in Idaho

I picked up an Orvis Encounter package for my few trips per year and it's done me well. Good price.

If I was going to have one rod in that part of the world, it would probably be a 6. You’ll be a little over gunned for small trout streams, a little under gunned for big largemouth flies, and just right for most smallies. If you’re only looking at trout then a 5 may be better.

That said, of my 2 6’s one I made and the other is no longer made so I don’t have a good recommendation. I like my TFO BVK 8wt but don’t know how the 6 is. Allen fly fishing has rods BOGO right now so you could go 4/6 or 5/7 or 5/8 if you’re a big largemouth guy. I like their reels but haven’t fished their rods so no direct experience there.

I’ve found the Orvis Clearwater on sale before. Did a quick search and didn’t see anything.

I'll take your recommendation for a 6 wt. I'm guessing it's less likely I'll be fishing small streams. Thanks y'all! I'll check out these rods!

TFO Pro II are on sale since the Pro III has come out. I picked up a 7wt and a 9wt for redfish for about $110 a piece. I'm pretty new to fly fishing but they are a pretty big step up from the TFO black lable combo I bought a a couple years ago.

If you plan on mainly trout fishing below Beaver I'd opt for the 5 wt. The fish see a lot of lures so be prepared to use long leaders and light tippet

So I'm not really familiar with the river system yet. But I'll hopefully be doing mostly weighting. I don't have a boat or a floattube yet for larger rivers in high water or pond/lake fishing. Not sure if that would change the calculus here for the local Arky crowd. Sounds like I should go lighter.

Assuming you're moving somewhere on the I49 corridor, Beaver dam and Roaring River will be the best wade opportunities. The 5wt will be plenty for those spots.

If you get into streamers and bass you'll likely want a second setup anyways. I use a 7wt for smallmouth

Redington CT 8'6" 5wt

You may be able to find for even cheaper if you googled or searched Ebay.

I haven’t done fly fishing in about 50 years. My Dad and I would use pirouge’s and fly gear to catch panfish in the canals down here.

Should I get a 4 wt. or lighter ? Can’t wait to start again.

If you are strictly panfishing then a 2-4 wt would be fine

Mix in some bass you would want to jump up to 5-6wt

With a 6wt you could also frick around with some redfish (not bulls).

That seems like the route to go. I probably won’t be fishing for bass when there’s brown trout in the area

Bass fishing is fun with a fly rod though. Used to do it in the Southern Idaho desert when I was little.
