I was sitting in the maintenance dept at the dealership a few months ago and all the salespeople walk out of a meeting and the sales manager says “give a round of applause for your top regional sales team!” And none of the customers clapped

It’s embarrassing to admit but 3 decades ago I paid full sticker for a full size Chevy truck. I just didn’t know any better. $19,800.00. Chevy extended cab Silverado with the 350 in it.

I then paid sticker and got suckered into fabric and paint protection on a dodge car for the wife a bit later.

We joke about it here but they know that for every 20 that walk through the door there is one that will walk in whose dad never educated him on car dealers.

All my grown kids know that I will drive or fly to them when their college car dies so that I can teach them how to negotiate and not get taken advantage of

It’s pretty disgusting the shameless way these dealers do this, no conscience at all

My most recent dealing with a salesman was November 2021. I had been searching for a particular SUV for awhile online and found one with the options and color I wanted. Made contact and went to take a look and test drive. The salesman was a nice older man. He was walking around the car with me, pointing out the features and said "it's even got halogen in the tires". I ignored everything he said after that. I knew way more about this car, and all other cars, than he did. He was shocked when his manager accepted my "lowball" offer.

I walked into the Ford dealership after work one day. Full suit and tie (back when that was normal office wear).

My wife and I stood in the entry for about 20 minutes while all the sales guys were huddled around BSing - we could hear parts of their conversation - all BS.

I said that's it lets go. As we turned to walk out one sales guy came up and asked if he could help us, I said I walked in here 20 minutes ago to buy a truck, and now I am going to drive 20 minutes to (a neighboring town) to buy the truck.

I did so. About two weeks later I was at a buddy's house and the owner of the dealership was there. We knew each other a little - he saw the competition's decal on my truck and asked wth? I told him what happened. That night two sales people were fired. The owner couldn't narrow down any further whose "turn" it was to handle walk-ins and they wouldn't tell him thinking there was no way he would can two dudes. He did.

Wife and I went to a lot to look at a couple models. Salesman comes out and starts pouring it on to me with the sales pitch. Wife was walking around. She came back over and said, “Let’s go.” I told the guy that I had to go. He said you don’t want to test drive ABC model? Wife said, “No, we don’t. The car is for me and you never even greeted me. You have a lot to learn about sales.”

It was so you could go home and finish screwing yourself “dahlin”

1981, negotiating with the salesman on a new Olds. Wife blurts out, it matches the color of my purse. Salesman stopped negotiating. We bought the car.

I was working as an F&I guy at a tote your note lot for about 2 years. The most ridiculous thing I heard had to do with the cars we had just purchased at auction. When we'd do that we'd load up half the salesmen into a van and everyone would drive a car back to the lot to get prepped for sale.

Rudy's office was across the hall from mine and he was a loud talker so I could always hear him clearly. Well, this one time I literally LOL'd at his pitch to the extent he blushed beet red and was like "What?". What he just told the young couple was ... "Oh yeah, she's a real cream puff, drives like a dream and has good miles on her."

It was a car I drove back from the auction 5 minutes earlier that he'd never laid eyes on till the customer pointed at it out the window, and it was a POS needing work to sell with high miles.

We were buying a car for the wife, no pics, to drive. It was going to be her car. The woman salesperson would only talk to me even though I told her I have nothing to do with this purchase. No sale.

In 2017 was purchasing my new luxury SUV. Went to the local dealership to test drive one and drove a year old version of what I was looking at buying which had almost 17K miles. Had no intentions of buying it but the salesman was very pushy.

It did solidify that it was the make/model I wanted so I started branching out my search to larger metro areas (Nashville, ATL). Was negotiating with two dealerships in Nashville and two in ATL via email on new cars as they were really cutting their prices and the local dealership would not budge. Both were very aggressive in pricing and trying to get my business.

In the end I went to ATL even though one of the GMs from Nashville called and was able to get within about $2500 of ATL but just could not do any better. He did wish me well and told me if for some reason ATL did not work out to please call him and let him know and he’d have my deal waiting for me.

GM from our local dealership was a complete arse. Told me I was stupid and I was getting bamboozled by the ATL dealership and “he looked forward to me coming in to pick out my new car after I came back from ATL empty handed”.

Went to ATL, dealership fully honored the deal sheet I had negotiated over email….I picked out the color I wanted and was in and out in a couple of hours. Best car buying experience I’ve ever had.

A week later the local dealership called and asked when I was going to come in to pick out the one I wanted. I told them they only thing I would be doing was scheduling the first service for my new car I bought in ATL. I ended up buying a brand new model for the same price….and exact same features….as what my local dealership wanted for a year old + model with almost 17k miles on it and not in perfect condition. The only difference in the two cars was age, mileage and color.

I absolutely could not believe that a GM of a luxury dealership would treat potential customers like he treated me or talk to me like that….like I was some idiot who had no clue what I was doing.

Back in 2007 I was looking for an SUV for the wife. She wanted a Rav4 so we went to the local Toyota dealership. Test drove it and she loved it. Sat down to talk price and all they would do is talk about the payments. They wouldn't talk about the price of the car at all. I finally told them I was walking if we couldn't talk about the full price of the car. Sales man goes to talk to the manager.

Manager comes out but it's a big mistake. At the time I worked for Alltel and handled many of our commercial customers. The manager that came out was the son of the owner of the dealership. He's a total a-hole all the time in our store. Just a self-entitled douchebag. As soon as he came out I looked at the sales guy and said "Well, you just screwed this sale." and left. Bought a Mazda Tribute instead. Still have it in the driveway.

Late 70s', asked for a quote on a Toyota pickup at Westbank Toyota. Salesman told me I had to put down a non-refundable $100 deposit to get a quote. Told him to frick himself and left. Another instance, late last year was in the market for a new truck. Stopped by Matt Bowers GMC in Slidell. Price was really good. When the salesman gave me a quote on my trade, he low balled me. I asked what was wrong with the truck. He said I need new tires for starters. These tires were put on by a GMC dealer and had 4,000 miles on them. I asked him WTF he was looking at and walked out and bought the same identical truck from a dealer in New Orleans with about $4800 more for my trade. You got to remember those MF need you. You do not need them. All you need to do is look.

Late 80’s Bought a used car from a used car dealer. Got a great deal, below book. Financed it through a local bank, three year note. Two and a half years in, I get a call from the police looking for the car. Bank had never received title, and the guy had used it, and a few others, as collateral for loans he never paid back. Bank had called police to repossess car, who found it through my registration.

I go to bank and sit down with smug loan prick who is telling me they need the to repo car because they didn’t have tile, blah blah blah, fricker was smirking at my 26 year old arse, thought he was gonna screw me over. He shite his pants when I whipped out my checkbook and said, I think I’ll just pay off my loan right now and the bank can give me the title to the car per our loan agreement. They panicked and didn’t call my bluff because they couldn’t give me the title. In the end the bank had to pay to get clear title to me.

Just this past late December, wife and I were looking to buy her a new suv. We found a 2021 Honda CRV at our local Honda dealership online. Price was reasonable and they advertised .99% financing. When we questioned about the financing, salesman said that it was for November only. Yet here it is at the end of December. So we thought possibly a mistake. Test drove the vehicle and liked it. When it came down to dealing, they way low balled our trade in that another dealership gave us a better price. Then, when they showed us the paperwork, they added $3000 to the price for "accessories ". When we questioned what was that, salesman said for floor mats and stuff. Lol. They were trying to double dip on accessories when they overpaid for it from the original owner. Needless to say we walked and found an awesome 75 year old sales lady at our local Hyundai dealership. We ended up with a 2023 Tucson and love it.

Hands down when i was buying a 2011 F-250 and trading in my 2005. Dude tried to explain to me over and over how i was wrong about the extended warranty (3rd party) and how i was going to regret it because i didn't know anything about repairs costs. I think he realized i might have known a little more than he thought when he called me up crying about how the truck i traded in had a wiped out transmission. Duh, that's why i traded it in.

Anybody who says that "I know that most car dealers are bad and dishonest, but I have a good and honest car dealer" are completely being taken for a ride. An honest car dealer is an out-of-work car dealer or someone who decided for a career change.

...As someone who sold cars for a living for a while, never take a trade-in to a dealership. Sell it yourself and use that as a down payment. As soon as you take a trade-in to a dealership, that's when you lose all of your leverage and all of the voodoo and magic tricks and bullshite begin.

Had to get a new car at the end of 2019 due to Bambi. Went to two local dealerships looking for a ‘19 as it was the end of the year and they were full of ‘20 models. Nobody wanted to deal, so I went across the state line to a Honda dealer in Oxford, AL, who had one I wanted. GM came up to me and asked if I was interested in an ‘18 model with a more luxurious trim package that I was wanting. Said he couldn’t sell a high end car like that in his area. I drove it and liked it; then he wanted me to pay more for it than the one I came to look at/buy. I laughed at him and told him I’d pay $x for it and no more. He said at that price he ought to just put it in his used car lot. I told him go ahead and he can pay ad valorem taxes on it for a third time. Got it for what I was willing to pay plus got a Vegas vacation voucher as well.

GM literally said to his salesman, “Get the paperwork signed, give them the keys, and get them the frick off my lot.” I almost walked away right then.

Went to the dealership where I bought the wife a new car for her first oil change. Long story short, they forgot to put oil back in the engine. I was pretty damn upset about it and let him, guy I bought the car from, know it (while he was trying to sell a car to another couple.) Dickhead didn't offer to give me my money back or a free oil change the next time around. He was a casual friend I had worked with at his previous job.

I guess he didn't like me much.

This isn't as bad as most but I felt it was pretty low. I recently bought my daughter a car for graduation from Texas Tech. We paid almost sticker for an Altima and paid 75% in cash during the sale.

Three weeks later the salesman calls about needing an "official transcript" showing my daughter was about to graduate for the $500.00 grad discount. We already provided the unofficial off the school portal. They needed an official transcript for the school.

I thought that was very petty.

We were taught in training that women always have to be convinced by the person they bring to the dealership to buy the car. Not once did I see a woman ever buy a car on our lot when she was by herself. If she's by herself, she's just farting around and flirting with the idea of buying a car, but won't actually pull the trigger until she comes back with her sister or husband or co-worker or pretty much anybody.
