It's because poor rural white people and poor rural black people from the south are essentially the same culturally, but with a few very flashy and noticeable differences in personality types.

Thomas Sowell figured this out decades ago.

I think this is true, from my brief time living in the San Fernando Valley. Segregation is pretty intense out there, and the balkanization of ethnic communities (Iranians, Armenians, Arabs, Turks, and especially Jews) is quite noticeable.

Several posters already referred to this but . . .

I spent several months in DC area on an internship. I was surrounded by NE Ivy Leaguers. Those were the most racists MF’s that I’ve ever been around.

They didn’t run around saying the “N” word. Their racism was different. It was clear that they viewed blacks as inferior. They smugly viewed themselves as the people who were going to swoop in and save the black community from the consequences of their inferiority.
