Hilarious that a state with a huge oil industry is doing this and people think it’s because of fairness.

There needs to be a mileage tax of some kind. Driving the same roads in heavier vehicles

A tax that's excessive? I'm shocked and appalled.

Texas has a $0.20/gal tax

Why aren’t you including other taxes? How does federal collect funding from EVs? Is it wrong to just assume all these taxes work together to fund roads? So if you get less federal revenue you have to make it up somewhere.

I mean, we pay taxes at he pump. Then again, I am sure we pay taxes on electricity, but those are not allocated to repair roads and improve infrastructure.

Bingo. They still aren't paying the federal tax of $0.18 per gallon, so they are still coming out ahead. States are making up for the feds collecting (and distributing) less.

You still can’t legally buy a Tesla in Tx. You have to purchase it through a different state then register it here yourself.

That's wild. They have a showroom not far from my crib. So if I went there they would direct me to call up some other spot and order it?

It will happen in every state. If it doesn't, there will be problems.

Worth it not to have to dick around with gas stations and probably still a money saver.

If this is going into transportation to make up for the loss of money from gasoline taxes, I have no problem with it.

Seems like most people would just scrap the vehicle at that point.

Dems voted for the bill too because it is reasonable. Now to the OP, tell us about how Abbot bailed out the private electric providers who lost money during the big freeze. We citizens are paying for that bail out with a new tax on our electric bills

So someone who can afford to buy an EV has to pay more? Seems to be on par with government.

I work about 3000 hrs a year and pay way more than my mother-in-law who worked 0 hrs and lives off the government.

I’m appalled that a tax could effect people of different socioeconomics groups differently

They hand you an iPad you order there. I think it goes through their Nevada location or something like that. Then you get your registration packet in the mail and you go down and pay the sales tax and register.

You sound like a liberal

You sound like an illiterate. Where did I express a preference of who taxes should be applied to? I merely pointed out that a tax that only applies selectively against one segment is unfair. If one is against a tax on EV’s for using a road then one should be against taxes on ICE vehicles also.

How else would Texas get funds for road repairs? Gas trucks pay a fuel tax for such a purpose.

An EV weighs about 33% higher than its ICE counterpart, so it contributes considerably more to road damage, so the $200 tax seems reasonable. A loaded 18 wheeler does the wear of 440 cars, just so you know.
