I have 2 2500 BGs: 7' med w/ 10 lb braid & 7' med heavy with 20' braid for sight fishing reds. If I fished passes more I'd opt for the 3000 with 30 lb braid.

That's their only weakness and at the price I think it's a small weakness. My two workhorses right now are a ci 4 plus (whatever it's called) and a JDM Luvias, but when I grab the BG I don't feel like I've taken a huge step down. It's heavier but in the other categories it's closer to those two than my bank account would like to admit.

Reliable
Lightweight
Smooth
Low price

If you want the first three you're not going to get the fourth.

Not true. I'd put that Okuma ITX against the Daiwa BG anyday. An ounce lighter and stronger drag to boot.

Shimano Spheros and NASCI are around the same price range too. That's 4 reel options between $90-$125 that are great options.

I've heard some pretty stellar things about both the Fuego and the Shimano Miravel. For a reel that will get used maybe 3x a year, I'm fine with a mid price option. If he wasn't going to be occasionally using it inshore, I'd have no qualms with one of the $60-80 daiwa options.

ci 4 plus

I've used both the Stradic Ci4+ and the Vanford Ci4+ and they're both excellent. For what I do, I can't justify more than that on a spinning reel.

I bought a mint Rarenium Ci4+ off BBC. It's been my main fresh spinner for a couple years. I reach for my Fuego now every chance I get. It will be hard for me to buy any spinning reel other than Daiwa. I really want a Saltist after seeing some videos on it recently.

I agree with the posts on 2500 but I recently bought a reel and noticed a difference in size between the penn and shimano in 2500. One seemed right in 3000 and one seemed right at 2500. Since I had enough Shimanos I tried the Penn Saltwater IV and love it. I did add some oil to it at start and it is as smooth as shimano and feels stronger built.

I'm not saying a BG is the ONLY option, just that it's a solid choice. I haven't fished every $120 reel, but of the few that I have none of them were a clear winner over the BG. If someone wanted a nasci I wouldn't try to talk them out of it.

Not sure what size you're looking at but Midwayusa.com has an "open box" Saltist 2500 for $147

I've bought lots of their "open box" items and they've all been brand new never opened. Mostly the boxes were dirty or very slightly damaged on a corner.

They also have the Daiwa Tatula 80 casting reel for $123 in RH 6:1 and 8:1 or LH all 3 ratios.

I have the Tatula 70 sv and allegedly the Tat 80 is essentially the same reel without the SV spool which means it's a fantastic reel. Maybe not as good for skipping without the SV but for chunk and wind applications it'd be great.

I have two of the SV spools, the Coastal and a JDM Zillion. They're pretty impressive and are slowly replacing my Shimano baitcasters.

Same here. I have the Tatula SV Tw103 and the Tatula 70sv. Love them both.

To me, they're better at specific tasks than shimano mgl spools, but worse at general applications. For lighter end lures (1/4oz and under) and for any cast that might generate excessive slack line (skipping in particular) the sv spool is awesome.

For general purpose chunk and wind and for long casting, I like the Curado mgl 70 and mgl 150.

So on bottom contact rods and finesse rods, I go with the SV and on moving bait rods it's usually the MGL spool if I'm picking between those 2 options.

ETA: I really don't like switching between those 2 systems during fishing though. The reels behave differently and the cast mechanics are different and I backlash way more when I switch back and forth.

I can feel an oz difference in how it balances an otherwise very lightweight rod.

The way Alx talks about you, I'm liable to get a flaming pile of dogshit on the porch if I give you my address.

I appreciate the offer, but if you're that down on it, give it to a kid just getting into fishing.
