I'm building a spinning rod for my brother. He doesn't fish much at all of his own volition, but due to his work and being my brother, he does find himself "Fishing adjacent" a few times a year.

All that to be said, I'm making him an all around spinning setup for south LA. The rod will be built on an NFC HM MB705 blank which rates out as a lighter MH/F rod. This rod should cover just about everything inshore and bass fishing he would throw.

I'm an avid fisherman, but don't use spinning gear for anything heavier than finesse bass tackle. I'm struggling on which size spinning reel to pair with the rod. I'm leaning towards a 3000 size but a 4000 is also an option.

Any spinning reel users out there care to chime in?

TLDR - what size spinning reel for an around 7' MH/F rod?

All my spinning reels are 2500's & they are all on 7' medium or medium heavy rods.

3500s are the best size to use, they have good drag heavy enough for the big reds, and yet still great for catching specks and everything else

i like the Diawa Sweepfire 3500 Spinning Reels best

Yep get a 3000. I really like my Okuma ITX reels that I got for less than $100. Shimano and Daiwa have some great reels around that price point as well.

Customer reels are Diawa BG 2500's ($120), Tuesday a kid on my boat caught a 44.5" red with that reel. Add some 30# braid and you can ling fish with it also.

ALF has the Daiwa Fuego LT on BOGO for 3000 and 4000 size

Kind of a no-brainer, right? I've fished several Daiwas but not that specific model. I'm assuming it's a quality reel for bass and inshore.

I have two 7' MH rods, one is a pfleuger president size 40 and one is a pflueger supreme size 40. I guess they probably corresponds to "size 4000" in other models. Also, I fish with mono so line capacity is a factor. If I were doing braid I could go smaller I guess.

If there's a better spinning reel at that price point I haven't fished it. That reel led me to a string of Daiwa purchases when I owned nothing but Shimano at the time.

Fuego is junk, pay the extra coin for the BG. My Fuego's are in the bayou now, do not hold up.

Ive been happy with my shimano stradic. You can buy them brand new starting around $170 depending on which specific model you want.

I dont want a heavier reel like the BG. If not the fuego, I'll probably go with the Shimano Miravel

Curious what your experience was with the fuego? It's received pretty universal praise from my research.

Because they are fantastic reels. Kemo is basically Keaker - just ignore him

No more suggestions or loans of the hot bait when we go fishing grasshoppa
I am sorry yours have not been challenged like mine's have, they don't hold up to the number of fish we put in the boat.
