We've evacuated nola for Katrina, stayed for Ida...Ida's winds felt like they were never going to end.....

I remember the eerie feeling of driving down I-10 from the Bay St Louis exit to Gulfport a few weeks after Katrina. The number of pieces of boards, roofs, toilets that made its way to I-10 was surreal.

I remember flying over New Orleans a few times shortly after Katrina, on beautiful, clear nights, what was kind of eerie was seeing a big black hole where New Orleans used to be

New Orleans has really never came back from it. It was permanent destruction as far as local culture/tourism.
You have to wonder if it’s the only big city in the US to get hit by a natural disaster and never actually recover to what it once was. I’m having trouble thinking of any others.

I get what you mean but immediately afterward there were no lights at all, just a big dark area, it was a different look

Ida caused higher wind gusts in New Orleans than Katrina did. It should be noted, however, that some of the wind reports from Katrina are incomplete due to some failures. The data that is available, though, shows that Ida was at least equal to or stronger than Katrina in New Orleans.
Katrina was weakening at landfall and Ida was strengthening at landfall, two very different scenarios.

What sticks out in my mind about the terrible days following Katrina? A MSM news reporter interviewing folks walking towards him to high ground in waist-deep toxic water. Including one young black woman who when asked how she felt about having to do that responded in disgust,"I'm Soaking Wet!"
She was not terrified at the possibility of being bitten by poisonous snakes, or alligators flushed from the nearby swamp, only that she was soaking wet. I chuckled even as I admired her attempt at practicality. Human beings are a resilient bunch.
Yep, hurricanes do interrupt people's lives.
To that brave young lady.......

wasn't the storm itself that did NOLA in, it was when Lootie and Teedy blew up the levees

that NWS message is crazy scary. I was 18 at the time living in BR and the devastation is still jawdropping looking at pictures today.
