Planning a trip (1 weeks time) for my wife and I next summer to visit both. Was looking for some recommendations on the most convenient airport travel to go to both places and any other recommendations on lodging/tours/restaurants.

1 hr 42 min from Bozeman airport to West Yellowstone
1 hr 35 min from Jackson Hole airport to Big Thumb WY

Ideal case- Fly into one of those (Jackson/Bozeman) and out of the other as long as the rental car drop off fee isn't ridiculous. That would save you some end of trip driving nearly 3 hours back to the original airport

Not saying it’s ideal, but we flew into Bozeman and immediately drove to Jackson. It was a long day but I don’t mind the drive.

From there, it’s not bad slowly making your way back stopping at each park for as long as you want.

Friend,

Jackson Hole is one of our favorite airports. If the weather is clear, the approach on the west is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. The airport is small and everyone there is so friendly. The NP book shop is the only NP store I have seen in an airport. It is also just a short distance from the Four Seasons, which is where we have stayed in Jackson. I have never flown to Bozeman. We have flown to Missoula and driven to Yellowstone, which was a most enjoyable drive. The food is Montana and Wyoming is lacking. There is not a single restaurant in either state I can heartily recommend. You would think the steaks there are great. They are not. The local fish served in restaurants is usually a rainbow trout which is perhaps the most boring fresh water fish known to man. Some places have a decent burger, but I am going through my memories and can yet to think of an outstanding meal in either state.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Rental cars were a real issue in Jackson when we went. There were none.

We flew into SLC, spent a couple of days there, and then drove the 6hrs to Jackson. Beautiful drive and it was very easy. We love SLC and loved Jackson.

We (family of four) went in summer 2021. Flew into and out of Jackson Hole Airport, which is right between Jackson and the entrance to Grand Teton NP.

Got there late in the evening the first night, so stayed in a hotel in Jackson; spent the next three days and nights at Signal Mountain Lodge in Grand Teton NP, in a single cabin with a view of Jackson Lake:

Lots of fun stuff there, hiking, canoeing, horseback riding; great views:

Day after that drove to Yellowstone NP, stayed in the beautiful rustic Old Faithful Inn for the next three nights. Saw all the usual stuff-- lots of driving and traffic in Yellowstone:

At the daughters' request we then drove up to Big Sky, Montana for one night and checked that out. By that point of the trip the wildfire smoke that year was really making things very hazy all over:

We drove back to Jackson via Idaho (which was kinda cool) just to say we had been in that state, and spent one more night in Jackson before flying back the next morning.

Rental cars back then (in 2021) were very expensive; we did better by not having the one-way drop off. Originally we were going to end up (and leave from) Bozeman but the flights and rental car cost was so damn cost-prohibitive we just did the loop from Jackson:

I would maximize your vacation time, and fly into Jackson.

The drive up from SLC isn't the most interesting, it doesn't get cool till Swan Valley. The drive down from Bozeman through Paradise Valley is great though.

Flying in/out of Jackson is expensive but it is by far the most convenient.

We went in May 2021. Landed in Jackson around 1PM, spent an hour or 2 around the square, then drove to Yellowstone. We spent a few days in Yellowstone then worked our way down to the Tetons for a few nights. Spent the last night in Jackson to catch our flight back out the next morning. Amazing trip.

fwiw, I just did that drive up to Driggs a few weeks ago and it took about 4.5 hours with a stop for lunch and gas. Jackson would be about the same. Maybe a bit more.

I know that most rental places will either not let you, or charge a hefty fee to get a car in SLC and leave it at the Jackson airport.

Jackson is definitely easier, but the drive from SLC isn't that bad.

Bozeman might not be as convenient as Jackson, but my wife and I just flew in and out of there last weekend with no trouble whatsoever. There were plenty of rental cars available as well. We drove to West Yellowstone and through a little bit of the park during our trip, but we only allocated a small part of our trip to Yellowstone itself. If you do fly in and out of Bozeman, there are three routes you can take to Yellowstone from there. All three routes offer gorgeous scenery and plenty of stops along the way to keep you entertained (It's roughly a 2 hour drive).

When we drove to Yellowstone, we went south through Ennis, MT and ate breakfast there at the Ennis Cafe. Food was great and the town was fun to walk around. We saw plenty of antelope, drove through three states (Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming), and saw plenty of beautiful lakes and rivers. When we returned to Bozeman, we drove through the route that passes Big Sky. I'm not sure how our travels will compare with tourist season in the summer, but I would do the trip again in a heartbeat (same time of year too). Here's the thread I started and the board was very helpful here: Bozeman MT Travel Recs For 2 Day Visit. We ended up doing a lot of the board's recommendations and both of us loved our trip.

Jackson Hole airport is basically in the Tetons and 2 hours away from Old Faithful.

I recommend the Jackson Lake Lodge for first timers.

I would also stay at the Old Faithful Inn as a first timer as well.

Just went last month. Flew into and out of Bozeman. Drove through Yellowstone on the way to Jackson.

On the way back we went around the west side of the Tetons and up to West Yellowstone and around. Was a neat drive though some little towns.
