They inherited a very large military industry when the Soviet Union broke up, the T-80 came out of the Kharkov design bureau, but there weren’t a lot of customers for what they could produce, and so the entire system decayed. I don’t think the A2 would have done much better. The Ukranians don’t have air cover or sufficient artillery support. The Russian are hitting these tanks with drones, long range anti tank missiles, and in some cases, guided artillery shells.
