I was telling my grandpa today that 40 must be the age when it starts to hurt just to get out of bed. He’s 83 and he said he doesn’t remember when it didn’t hurt to get out of bed

Yep. Still feel like I have to tell him

Yeah, it sucks watching your parents get old. What really makes it worse is how many older people do so little to extend their vitality. It makes the aging process so much worse.

I’m 66. My son is 40 or so. I wish I could become an old respected man in his eyes. He will go crossways with me on anything. Hopefully I will go soon and won’t wish for anything better in between us any longer. I’m tired of hoping.
At 54 I am not what I used to be. But I should have a good bit left in the tank.

Both my and the wife’s parents are early 70’s. Up until this year, all their health was pretty good without anything significant. Still able to remember things and “with it”. Then all of a sudden over the past 3-4 months we’ve noticed in both sets they just forget certain things we’ve spoken about in recent past. Overall their health is a lot better than most their age but the change in behavior on a dime from time to time is wild and really difficult to understand.

Agree. My dad is 75 and still farms full time, and runs circles around me with energy. 59 and out of breath seems like heart issues.
But to the OP, it is weird to see them shrink, turn gray, hear voices change…

All my life I've prayed for people, especially people who didn't like me for whatever reason. I prayed for a boss who tried to get me fired from my job (his immediate boss refused to fire me). So I spent the rest of my life praying for people - parents, siblings, friends and acquaintances, especially my enemies (we all have them). It's not easy, but I would argue those are the prayers that have the most impact. You just have to be persistent. Keep on keeping on.
So pray for your father, even though you feel it's useless to do. Nothing fancy - God please touch my Dad's heart, apparently I can't but you can if you so will it, Amen. Nothing fancy.
Trust me, persistent prayer will produce results one day.
I will remember you in my prayers as well.
P.S. - The Boss who tried to get me fired, became a good friend. He asked me to bring communion to his dying Dad. Never give up on someone - never.

My dad is suffering from dementia/parkinsons. Can't move on his own. Needs constant help. I noticed the decline shortly before his diagnosis. He would do things that were kind of stupid (like try to lift a heavy BBQ pit for no reason), then hurt his back and forget what he was doing. My wife's dad is healthy, was playing tennis one day, and nearly died from a heart attack. Life is wild and scary. I hate to say but I hope I die quick. No long illness or situation where someone has to change my diaper. A friend of mine's mother suffered from a horrible illness and died slowly over many years. It was awful. After she died, his dad was diagnosed with cancer and blew his head off, left a note explaining why he did it and it was basically because he didn't want to be a burden on his children.

I wish my parents were still around to observe getting old.

Its weird for your parents to get old in front of you. There is no playbook for getting old, its different for everybody. Cherish every moment you have with him. if he's feeling bad or suffering from fatigue, a simple checkup may not be enough. Medications have a lot of side effects, fatigue being one of many, check into it. He's young to be feeling tired this easy, something is causing that, find out what it is.

What is weirder is seeing myself get old.
I was pretty good looking when I was young, got more than my share of poon, etc.
Now when I see a photo of myself,it is disturbing.I have gotten seriously ugly.
I’m 72,still deer hunt,clean my own deer,handle a chainsaw,all such as that.
I avoid being in photos, hate to see myself.

Awesome post, thank you for sharing. You’re 100% correct…forgiveness and seeking God’s mercy for us and others is all part of Jesus’ commandment to love one another as we love ourselves.

I am 61 and work out several days per week to be that 72 year old guy you mentioned.

This right here. He should not be winded that easily.
Make him have a stress test. DO NOT take no for an answer.
You think it's a weird feeling to see them old? Wait until you're standing beside their casket.
Get his arse to the doctor this week.
EDIT: Writing this post made me remember. My mother died 3 years ago today.
