Purple Martins already?

For the second day in a row, I’ve seen what looks like huge flocks of Purple Martins in the NOLA area. I’m talking about in the hundreds, just leisurely flying around as far as I could see in every direction. Is that possible? Didn’t think they did that here this early.

Could have been tree swallows. There's been some large flocks reported around the New Orleans area recently.

Only if they haven't left yet. Late January to early February is their normal arrival times.

Yeah, I couldn’t positively ID them. Late in the evening and overcast. Could’ve been a different type of swallow I suppose. Same size and flight characteristics for sure.

Swallows do this every Fall. The huge groups I am seeing consist of a mix of tree and barn.
