I got into Alpha 2 this week (the "wilderness alpha"), it's been an interesting time.
The game, at least thus far (it's still in alpha, after all) is much more of a hobby-style game than "I'm just looking to kill a few minutes".
There's definitely combat (PVE and PVP), dungeons, crafting and magic, but the focus is on being heavily player-driven for the creation of goods (through resource gathering and crafting).
The game is absolutely beautiful, even in this alpha environment. The building UI needs some work (again, alpha) and combat (at least the extremely limited version I've experienced) isn't all that deep (swing, swing, swing). People resource harvesting and crafting together get more from each endeavor and get it faster (three folks with adjoining plots not far from me created their own guild and in a day have FAR outpaced my meager setup).
Sadly, this alpha lasts only a week but I've been enjoying it immensely thus far.

In a clan of 70 and we still might be lucky to get plate armor by sunday. Did make a pretty huge castle and have cleared a couple of dungeons.
They added a free camera mode in the most recent patch which is only really useable if you use a controller. It's amazing for exploring though. (F7)
I think their original plan to do early access by the end of spring would be a big mistake. Combat needs more mechanics than shield bash and swing. T4 bows only do a few extra damage from the starter bow so fletching is nearly pointless with all the damage coming from arrow type.
Visuals are amazing. Character movements are legit. When you walk up a hill it actually looks like your model struggles more than when walking on flat ground.
I just feel like it's missing something. Either a quest system or an economy. Something beyond grinding resources. Dungeon bosses and mounts are planned but need to be a high priority. Aside from individual weapon experience there is no reason for anyone to grind anything if they join a guild who already has crafters. Why waste the time?
Fill your packs with wood. Set them into kilms to slowly burn into charcoal at 20 min per craft... fill your bag with ore... combine ore with your charcoal to slowly craft ingots 1 hour for 20.... repeat process 1200 times to have enough resources to level your skills enough to craft a tier 3 weapon... still need a party of 10 to efficiently move through PvE content.
It's a unique experience. A beautiful world. Just not very fulfilling. If it winds up subscription-based on top of pay to play i dont think it survives.
Here's hoping light no fire and dune awakening do things better.
