sack up buddy you get in there now and do it. Give him 2 weeks notice and tell him you will be in to work out the details tomorrow

If you're leaving him in a tight spot, tell him you're more than willing to help in every way you can that won't interfere with your new hours.

Your situation depends on YOU to interpret, not some random internet message board. Whether you're doing him right/wrong only YOU really know. But in the end, you have to do what's better for you.

I'd offer him a chance to counter as a courtesy.

Part of business is turnover. Do your best to help him transition to a new sales guy and try to leave on a good note.

In that small a company, your boss should be able to take your place. Even as a temporary solution, he should know what you do well enough to handle the situation.
When he sees the five you have working for him, you will be far away and thankful.

Somewhat.

i left my first real position for another with slightly less pay and a "demotion".

i did it partially as a frick you to my boss there. Everyone hated him. i ripped him a new a-hole on my exit interview. Few months later he relieved of direct duty of that department.

that being said i had a lot of friends there and few of my mentees. i felt horrible leaving them but i knew they could keep things going.

Your boss will do what he needs to do to keep things going.

If he truly was a great mentor and has treated you well, make sure to leave on good terms. You never know if you might need something from him in the future.

He should be more than understanding of the better opportunity. A 2 week notice plus helping him to transition should be more than enough.

You're lucky you haven't had to find out the hard way that nobody cares about you. Only them and theirs.

Look out for you and yours.

If it makes you feel better, any boss I quit on that I was worried how’d they react they almost always take it well and understand.

But the ones I figured would have no issue made the whole situation very uncomfortable.

Business is business. How your boss reacts is not your concern. You think if he had to let you go he’d think twice? Nope.

Leave gracefully and don’t burn any bridges.

He's a great salesperson and has taught me a lot from a sales perspective. He's 33 and I wouldn't say he's the greatest business owner.

So if your role in the company is sales, he should have no problem stepping into your role while working to fill the position. Also your description of the company makes it sound like you don't have much to do since you don't have inventory to sell. They will be fine and better off without you because this will be their wake-up call to pay attention to the business. Congrats on your new position.

UPDATE: He took it very well. He's really excited for me. Gave me some tips and wished me well.

He's giving me til Wednesday to get my desk in order and then having a 1.5 weeks off til my next role. He even said he wished the start date was sooner so I could have two checks doubled up together.

I told him I wouldn't have gotten this offer without everything he taught me and he said that's what he wants to hear as a boss.

If he is a good boss he should be happy for you, if not then he would expect you to be loyal and the only person you own to be loyal to is yourself.

He will find someone else.
