The point of money laundering is to conceal the source of funds to make it look like money that was received illegally look legitimate.
In politics, book deals are a big one. Publisher gives politician a large advance to write a book. Taxpayer dollars are then used to purchase numerous copies of said book for a ridiculous price. Remember the story that came out a few years ago where Kamala Harris's children's book was included in welcome kits for "migrant" children? That's probably the easiest example I can think of. CNN and WaPo fiercely denying that happened only confirmed that it actually did happen. This is how politicians get rich off the back of taxpayers while using a few layers to make it look legitimate.
Obama getting fricking $70M in a book deal and a $50M Netflix deal should have raised some red flags for anyone with an IQ above room temperature.
