The wife and I went today for the 25th year anniversary showing. I was 11 when it came out so it always felt like Anakin was my generations Luke.

The Bad:

Jar Jar Binks was just terrible. Not funny and many times you couldn’t understand what he was blubbering about.

The trade embargo stuff was just so unnecessary and boring. What was Lucas thinking?

The Good:

Darth Maul was great and should have been the main villain throughout or at least until Ep 3.

Pod Race scene is fantastic in theaters.

Duel of Fates is amazing

To show the greatest evil in the galaxy is not the Sith, but political bureaucracy.

I mean... it kind of shows Palpatine's rise to power which you can say is the major outcome of the movie aside from Anakin getting with Obi Wan

Went today as well. Me and about 10 others at noon. I sat in front of an old man and right before the opening, there was the announcement that a sneak preview of The Acolyte would play after the movie

The old man snorted and said, “Fat chance.”

I think I’m gonna go to an afternoon showing.

Have nothing else to do

And I’ll go back for the nostalgia alone as I remember vividly 25 years ago seeing it in theaters as a 10 year old

If they would have done a few of things differently, it could have been a very good episode.

Completely get rid of Jar Jar and all of his people.

Anakin should have been about 12 or 13 and a better actor.

Don’t make the droid army so comic relief slapstick.

Mainly get rid of the silliness they put into it. There’s a little bit of silliness in every Star Wars episode. Empire definitely has the least amount of silliness in it. I wonder why people like it the best.

I actually like the trade federation plot. I don’t care if it’s boring. At least we get some kind of beginning to how the whole war started.

Not sure if this was addressed in another thread, but ViceTV was re-airing its "Icons Unearthed: Star Wars" series yesterday. A couple of takeaways:
1) Likely the greatest reason why the prequels didn't work - Lucas did not have anyone around to tell him "no." When producing the original trilogy, he had pros like Irvin Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan, Gary Gertz, Howard Kazanjian and Marcia Lucas (his first wife) to reel him in at different points in time. During the prequel trilogy, it was mostly Lucas and some guys who helped him with "Young Indiana Jones."
2) Lucas truly thought that Jar Jar would be the breakout character. Ahmad Best really got a raw deal. A lot of the cast & crew thought he was incredibly talented. Liam Neeson told his agent "I'm working with the next Eddie Murphy."
3) The Lucasfilm marketing people knew Phantom Menace was kinda shitty and felt bad about how they cut that first trailer, which set expectations even higher.
4) At the time of its release, there were rumors that Spielberg "rescued" Revenge of the Sith. Apparently his only real involvement was consulting on the big Kenobi/Anakin duel, which he did not just to help Lucas, but to also learn more about some new pre-visualization stuff that Lucasfilm developed.

Took my mother to opening day 25 years ago for mothers day and we went last night. I know the story well but I chose to really focus on Palpatine's manipulation and it was solid. Once you get passed jar jar and anakin scenes it is a good movie

I will never forgive Lucas for spoiling Maul's 2nd lightsaber blade in the final trailer.

That could've been such an amazing surprise.

I have only seen the prequels once and will never watch again. The ones that followed the originals other than Rogue one i will never watch again. Rogue One will never be the same as the original 3 but compared to the rest of the movies it's a dam classic.

I was in the 5th grade when this film came out and my dad checked me out of school early to go see it. So I will always have a soft spot for the film. While I loved (and still do) the original trilogy, I didn't really have a favorite character until this film and I saw a young Obi-Wan, who to this day many years later is still my favorite SW character. Also, there is no better lightsaber duel in the entire series than Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon vs Darth Maul with Williams epic Duel of The Fates.

Is Jar-Jar unbearable? Yes.
Are there moments where this film is dull? Yes.

However, I think overall the good outweighs the bad.
